Book Review | Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas

Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas
Cemetery Boys
by Aiden Thomas

Yadriel has summoned a ghost, and now he can't get rid of him.

When his traditional Latinx family has problems accepting his true gender, Yadriel becomes determined to prove himself a real brujo. With the help of his cousin and best friend Maritza, he performs the ritual himself, and then sets out to find the ghost of his murdered cousin and set it free.

However, the ghost he summons is actually Julian Diaz, the school's resident bad boy, and Julian is not about to go quietly into death. He's determined to find out what happened and tie off some loose ends before he leaves. Left with no choice, Yadriel agrees to help Julian, so that they can both get what they want. But the longer Yadriel spends with Julian, the less he wants to let him leave.

My Book Review

An extremely powerful story about the need for acceptance and unconditional love, and the bravery of being oneself!

Cemetery Boys narrated the story of Yadriel, a young trans brujo, who is struggling to be accepted by his traditional family. When his cousin dies under unusual conditions, he will attempt to summon his spirit in order to investigate his murder and prove himself and his powers. But, when the wrong spirit gets summoned, an unexpected adventure will begin...

This particular story and book are so close to my heart, and I am pretty sure it will be a long long time before I forget how deeply they both touched me.
The writing style was very easy-flowing and modern, making me unable to put the book down.

Each and every one of the characters was so well-written, so fun to read about and we managed to get a full glimpse into their ways of thinking and understand their point of view, even if we didn't particularly agree with their opinions or actions.
Yadriel, the main character, was a trans gay boy, a powerful brujo and an amazing hero to read about. His bravery and courage were evident in all his choices. Simultaneously, his inner turmoil was described so accurately that it definitelyhit home.
Maritza, Yads's sidekick, was one of the coolest characters, a vegan bruja who refused to sacrifice or use the blood of animals in order to heal other people. So courageous and brave to be herself in her own way!
Lucian, the ghost Yads accidentally summoned, started out being a fun character with a strong personality but as the book progressed we got more and more glimpses into his mind and we warmed so much towards him.

The magic system in this story was so interesting, with the brujx having different powers depending as to whether they were male or female. The males were able to summon spirits and send them to the afterlife, while the females were capable of healing, both people and animals.

To sum up, Cemetery Boys managed to enter into my heart and nestle there, it touched on fairly sensitive subjects for our society in a way that emphasized the importance of addressing them and accepting everyone for who they really are.

My review:

Before I get on with my review, I would like to say just one word... Roy.
That man honestly made me remember why I love my occasional romance novel.

But, first things first.
The story starts with a delivery Daisy is making to a movie set and is nearly assaulted, until Roy heroically saves her.
And, their romance just launches from there.

At some points in the beginning, it seemed to me like Daisy and Roy's romance was almost non-existent, and at some others going almost too fast.
However, that definitely did not stop me from emerging myself into it once it got off.

What I really liked about this book was the fact that not everything was outright given to us.
Instead, Daisy's backstory, her scars and the secrets she was hiding were slowly revealed, making the heroine even more mysterious for us readers, too.
And, this is exactly what made this book stand out to me and make me devour it as quickly as I possibly could.

And, do not get me started about the even more mysterious Roy, whose ways charmed me along with Daisy. Beware though, as Mr Lethal has his own secrets, too...

Anyway, my interest was spiked even more when the quest to find Daisy's parents - as well as its twists and turns - really started.

Another reason I loved this novel was the way it was written. It is so easy to read and smoothly progressing, you just can't resist reading it in one sit.

I do not want to spoil any dark secrets or to ruin the mystery element by saying more, so I will just leave my review here, by saying that I definitely recommend this exquisite novel to fans of New Adult Mysteries, with a - pretty generous - dash of hot romance in it.

All in all, 4 stars for this brand new and utterly hot release,
with a strong, realistic heroine I loved figuring out along the way.

My Review:

I don't mention it nearly enough, but I love historical fiction, especially if the author successfully puts me into the climate and the mood of the time and age, in which the novel takes place.
There is also one more thing I love. The Medieval Times.

So, it didn't come as a surprise the fact that I loved this book.
It was pretty obvious right from the beginning that the author had made a great deal of research before writing this novel, and tried to stick closer to the truth as much as it was possible, while also giving the novel a personal tone and filling the holes of the history and mythology included in this book, very smoothly.

The story revolved around the parallel lives of Alfred of Wessex and Eadwulf of Mercia, who live in the two aforementioned parts of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms.
Their stories begin separately, and their childhoods are vastly different, while the story passes from territory to territory, each man is going to get closer to his real destiny.

I liked the plot very much, and I was very glad that we could also glimpse other countries as they were back in The Medieval Times.
The two men also learned quite a few valuable lessons through their road from childhood to manhood, some of which I also found really enlightening.

The writing style was perfect. It effectively gave off the feeling of the times, as well as described Alfred and Eadwulf's personalities and every factor that contributed to their final form and shape.

As for the characters, I liked quite a few, and especially one of the two boys was my favorite!
I'm not going to reveal exactly which one, because I am not sure I can do it without revealing any spoilers.
But, if you have also read this wonderful novel, or you are just curious to know, I would be more than happy to discuss and even compare opinions.

All in all, 5 stars to a wonderful historical novel,
that helped me explore in more depth a time and age
I had never before had the pleasure read about!

EXCERPT:

Dirt stains my hands, freezes my fingers. There are streaks of it all over my jeans, caking the sleeves of my coat.
“What the hell are you doing?”
My heart leaps into my throat and I whip around.
Sheriff Luke McCoy stands five yards behind me, hands on his hips, a look of confusion and horror on his face.
I don’t have an answer for him, so I go back to my task.
“Alivia.” I hear him walking toward me. “What are you doing, and why does it look like someone crawled out of that grave?”
“Because someone did,” I huff. My hands are numb now, making it difficult to maneuver the dirt. Thankfully, it’s still freshly turned enough that it’s not packed yet.
“And who might that have been?” he asks and his voice hardens with each syllable.
“Circumstances change people, you understand that, right?” I’ve got the hole half filled back in.
“What are you talking about?” Sheriff McCoy, now that he’s caught on to what this hole means and its implications, joins me in filling it.
“I told you a few months back that I was a good person. That I wanted nothing to do with the House.” My lungs burn from the effort of breathing hard in this cold air. “But circumstances change people.”
“What happened, Alivia?” he demands.
