Review | The Secret Key

Title: The Secret Key
Series: Agatha Oddly #1
Author: Lena Jones
Publisher: Harper Collins Children's Books

My rating: ★★★★☆

If you're looking for a totally fun mystery middle grade book, look no more!

The Secret Key is the very first novel in a brand new series by Lena Jones revolving around the adventures of Agatha Oddlow, a thirteen-year-old girl who's addicted to crime novels and wishes nothing more than to become a detective. And, she kind of is, already!

Due to her father's job, she lives in a small cabin in Hyde Park, which also happens to be the center of a few mysterious happenings. When things escalate and London's water supply is contaminated by a toxin, Agatha steps in to save the day!

An exceptionally-written novel, which kept you the readers in agony about what is going to happen next, how Agatha is going to get past each obstacle and what is really going on behind the scenes.
Considering this was the debut book of Lena Jones, I can't emphasize enough how impressed I was and how excitedly I'm waiting to read on in the series, as well as the future works of the author.

Our heroine is awesome, brilliant and accurately named after Agatha Christie. She is the perfect introduction to the famous crime novelist for young readers, who will grow up reading more mystery adventures!

I know, for one, I was captivated, mesmerized and set on reading the rest of Agatha Oddly's great adventures!

I would like to thank the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with an e-arc, in exchange for an honest review.

Goodreads Blurb:

Fan-favorite webcomic creator Megan Rose Gedris (Yu+Me Dream) crafts a compelling tale of magic, deception, and wonder in this stunningly illustrated graphic novel about the bond between sisters.

Pragmatic engineer Anna works as a psychic in the Samson Brothers Circus, but she doesn't believe in anything supernatural—until her twin sister Kat is murdered and comes back as a very demanding ghost. Sharing a room with her sister was hard, but now they're sharing a body while trying to identify the killer. With few leads, a troupe full of secretive folk, and strange paranormal occurrences popping up around the circus, solving the case seems near impossible. But the murderer in their midst may be the least of their problems...

My review:

I would like to thank the publisher and NetGalley for providing a free copy for me to read in exchange for an honest review.

This graphic novel might have been a little darker than I had originally anticipated (although, I am not sure what exactly I had expected when the blurb itself states that the heroine's twin sister is murdered), but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Anna is part of a circus, whose members are far more mysterious and secretive than originally assumed. And, after Kat's murder, this only becomes clearer and clearer. Because, the latter, might not have seen who her murderer was (stabbed right at the back, tsk tsk tsk), but she is set on finding out and soon. Recruiting Anna, of course. The plot just thickens from then on, with the heroine(s?) stumbling into more and more adventures almost by the page.

It was a nice introduction to a new series, and it definitely got me hooked right at the beginning. I was itching to know who the murderer was and what their motives could be, and I really hope this series develops into multiple volumes, following Anna and her ghost of a sister.

All in all, 3 stars to the very first volume of this graphic novel,
which seems to be highly promising.

My review:

Before I get on with my review, I would like to say just one word... Roy.
That man honestly made me remember why I love my occasional romance novel.

But, first things first.
The story starts with a delivery Daisy is making to a movie set and is nearly assaulted, until Roy heroically saves her.
And, their romance just launches from there.

At some points in the beginning, it seemed to me like Daisy and Roy's romance was almost non-existent, and at some others going almost too fast.
However, that definitely did not stop me from emerging myself into it once it got off.

What I really liked about this book was the fact that not everything was outright given to us.
Instead, Daisy's backstory, her scars and the secrets she was hiding were slowly revealed, making the heroine even more mysterious for us readers, too.
And, this is exactly what made this book stand out to me and make me devour it as quickly as I possibly could.

And, do not get me started about the even more mysterious Roy, whose ways charmed me along with Daisy. Beware though, as Mr Lethal has his own secrets, too...

Anyway, my interest was spiked even more when the quest to find Daisy's parents - as well as its twists and turns - really started.

Another reason I loved this novel was the way it was written. It is so easy to read and smoothly progressing, you just can't resist reading it in one sit.

I do not want to spoil any dark secrets or to ruin the mystery element by saying more, so I will just leave my review here, by saying that I definitely recommend this exquisite novel to fans of New Adult Mysteries, with a - pretty generous - dash of hot romance in it.

All in all, 4 stars for this brand new and utterly hot release,
with a strong, realistic heroine I loved figuring out along the way.

My Review:

I don't mention it nearly enough, but I love historical fiction, especially if the author successfully puts me into the climate and the mood of the time and age, in which the novel takes place.
There is also one more thing I love. The Medieval Times.

So, it didn't come as a surprise the fact that I loved this book.
It was pretty obvious right from the beginning that the author had made a great deal of research before writing this novel, and tried to stick closer to the truth as much as it was possible, while also giving the novel a personal tone and filling the holes of the history and mythology included in this book, very smoothly.

The story revolved around the parallel lives of Alfred of Wessex and Eadwulf of Mercia, who live in the two aforementioned parts of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms.
Their stories begin separately, and their childhoods are vastly different, while the story passes from territory to territory, each man is going to get closer to his real destiny.

I liked the plot very much, and I was very glad that we could also glimpse other countries as they were back in The Medieval Times.
The two men also learned quite a few valuable lessons through their road from childhood to manhood, some of which I also found really enlightening.

The writing style was perfect. It effectively gave off the feeling of the times, as well as described Alfred and Eadwulf's personalities and every factor that contributed to their final form and shape.

As for the characters, I liked quite a few, and especially one of the two boys was my favorite!
I'm not going to reveal exactly which one, because I am not sure I can do it without revealing any spoilers.
But, if you have also read this wonderful novel, or you are just curious to know, I would be more than happy to discuss and even compare opinions.

All in all, 5 stars to a wonderful historical novel,
that helped me explore in more depth a time and age
I had never before had the pleasure read about!

GENRE:  Urban Fantasy

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Alexa is keeping a secret from her husband and being half werewolf isn't it. After all, he’s a full-blood and doesn't care that there are those who think their union is an abomination. Despite their abnormalities, the Yorks have settled into suburbia and gone out of their way to look like the couple next door.
Their rouse may have fooled an entire community, but not the Georgia Pack. The Yorks have encroached on their territory. Most interlopers end up dead, especially when the bounties on their heads invite stalkers, killers, and psychos to collect. Despite the trouble the Yorks have brought with them, the domestic suburbanites have intrigued the pack.
Alexa’s less domestic than she seems. Eight months ago, her bounty hunting club disbanded after several team members lost their lives in an ambush. Since then, the club has reemerged and are expecting Alexa to take her rightful place among the ranks.
Keeping the truth from her husband about her extracurricular activities will strain the Yorks’ marriage and risk everything they’ve worked hard for. But, that’s the price Alexa pays when her deception becomes deadlier than her aim. A deception that also keeps her alive.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

Several shots exploded along the streets. Pedestrians screamed and ducked out of the way. Glass shattered from stray bullets.

My heart pounded in my chest. My nerves frayed to the point that revenge was the only thing on my mind. He needed to know what it felt like to have someone he held close to his heart nearly snuffed out before his eyes. How dare someone ruin a perfectly good night to use us like China plates in a shooting gallery? I tried to push past Matt’s thick body to get a peek at our enemy. I wanted to memorize their faces in case we met again. Preferably when I had my crossbow or bowie knife to level the playing field.

Whoever was in the car was gone. There were too many witnesses and too many potential witnesses. If they were smart, they’d ditch the car at the first subway station lot.

“Is everyone okay?” Stephan was the first on his feet and hitting the speed dial on his cell phone. He hurried back toward the sidewalk, stretching his neck to get a good look at the car.

“He’s not calling the police is he?” I finally manage to get out from under my husband who seemed more compact than a wolf about to pounce on his prey. In fact, Matt remained a little too quiet for my taste. I met his unyielding gaze. “What is it? What’s…?”

The smell of blood touched my nose.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
MY REVIEW:
Alexa is a human hybrid, a mix between a human and a werewolf. Most of the werewolves view her as an abomination, a weak hybrid that shouldn't be married to full-blood member of their species. But she is far from weak. A lethal bounty hunter, trained to kill, she practically lives a double life, as he husband knows nothing about her extracurricular activities.
After a tragic incident that ended up with many losses on both the bounty hunters' side and that of the rogues they fought, their club gradually disbanded. Eight months after that tragic night, Alexa and her husband, exiled to live without a pack, on their own, are finally taking a chance to live a normal life and even try to make a family.
But the local pack's insistence and getting close with Alexa and Matt, as well as the two bounties that are placed on their heads, have made their lives a bit more complicated! Alexa, after finding out that three of the bounty hunters that belonged to her club have gone missing, is forced to take her lethal nature up all over again!!
Will she be able to keep her secret identity a secret from her husband once more? And, how is Alexa's double life going to affect her relationship with Matt?
A very interesting novel that excited me right from the first few sentences of the prologue! There was action and adventure, as well as a very well-thought plot.
I loved the fact that the existence of the werewolves was kept a secret to all mankind, but a few hunters knew about them! And, I deeply enjoyed the existence of the bounty hunters! It was something very original and very new for me!
The fact that the protagonist was both the hunter and the hunted was very exhilarating. She wasn't only a bounty hunter, belonging in a club of lethal professionals who sought out rogue wolves to kill them, but at the same time she was the victim of a high bounty placed on her head.
Alexa was a strong young woman, that had been though a lot, even from the tender age of five years old. She knew how to hide her strength when she must, though, and pretend she was a weak hybrid. But, when the night fell she would transform into a lethal professional! I deeply admired her for that and her courage through all of this!!
Matt, her husband, was one of my other favorite characters, too. He was a werewolf lawyer, a fact that made him very special for his species. And a very good one at his job, too! He was handsome and intelligent. The perfect mate for the brave heroine of the book!
All in all, 4,5 stars for a thrilling adventured that
kept up the excitement from the very first sentence, to the very last!
Heartbeat Thief
  The Heartbeat Thief by Ash Krafton
 Haunted by a crushing fear of death, a young Victorian woman discovers the secret of eternal youth—she must surrender her life to attain it, and steal heartbeats to keep it. Poe meets Austen in this haunting tale of death and endless devotion… Being the most beautiful debutante in 1860’s Surrey isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be. Senza Fyne knows all too well the expectations set upon a young Victorian woman—and she also knows that, in one fell swoop, death can just whisk it all away. When she meets the mysterious and mystical Mr. Knell, she is offered the chance to escape the chains of Life and Death and to enjoy the bliss of youth and beauty for all eternity. But that takes magic…and a steep price. She’d have to surrender her life to gain an eternity and she’d have to steal the heartbeats of others in order to keep it. She has everything to gain if she succumbs to his spell…but knows not what she might lose. It’s a little bit Jane Austen, a little bit Edgar Allan Poe, and a whole lot of stealing heartbeats in order to stay young and beautiful forever. From the posh London season to the back alleys of Whitechapel, across the Channel, across the Pond, across the seas of Time…How far will Senza Fyne go to avoid Death?
A.J.  Author A.J. Crafton The Heartbeat Thief is the first release for AJ Krafton, a New Adult speculative fiction author from the Pennsylvania coal region. If she’s not writing, it’s probably because she’s distracted by all the cool junk on her desk or by the stacks of books that have grown up around it. She also writes novels, short fiction, and poetry for adult audiences as Ash Krafton.
Praise for The Heartbeat Thief "It’s a supernatural story, but it doesn’t rely on the conventions and themes that have gone before it. To be honest, when I picked it up I was expecting witches and/or vampires, but I found something else entirely. I loved the story and the concept." "True to its word, "The Heartbeat Thief" is part Jane Austen, part Edgar Allen Poe. The author revives the best of the style of writing found in the classics: the introspect of characters, lovely allusions comparing characters to nature and life, beautiful alliteration and prose. Mixed with this is a deep foreboding of death, a macabre sensation that follows Senza throughout the story." "Beautiful imagery and language shape this intriguing story that spoke to me about the meaning of maturity and purpose in life. Lovely!"
    “What belongs to me? Be specific. I want the words.” “My pussy belongs to you. I belong to you. No matter what I do, I know I belong to you. I love you. I love you so much, Connor.” She poured her heart into those words, willing him to believe her. “And I belong to you. No matter what I fucking do. You remember that. You take those words and memorize them because no matter what happens, they’re true and they’re going to stay true. I won’t let you take them back. Ever.” She wouldn’t want to. “I love you.” “That means everything to me, princess.” He withdrew his fingers and gripped her hips. She felt his erection probe between her thighs. “I’ve never wanted anything the way I want you. Remember that, too.” She couldn’t reply because the head of his cock breached her in one hard thrust. He didn’t ease into her or give her time to adjust. He gave her every inch he had, holding her hips and forcing himself inside her. She was invaded and dominated. He controlled and conquered. A shock of tingles rolled through her body. She whimpered. “Push back against me,” he commanded. She thrust back and tossed her head at the feel of him sliding in to the hilt. It was almost too much. He held himself steady, and his left hand slid up to her breasts. He shoved the bra above her mounds and cupped her as he pulled out and stroked back in. He thumbed her nipple then gave it a twist. “Never again, Lara. I swear to god if you lie to me again, I won’t be responsible for what I do to you. I’ll tie you to the bed and I won’t ever let you leave again. Your whole life will be about taking my cock. You won’t see the fucking outside world. You’ll spend every day on your back and your knees and any other way that pleases me.” She found him endlessly amusing when he was angry. Somehow she couldn’t see him actually turning her into a sex slave, but she was sure in the moment it seemed like a viable option to him. He twisted her nipple again, and a pleasurable pain shimmered through her. She responded before he could do it again. “Yes, Connor. I won’t see the light of day. I understand.” “I’ll chain you to me, Lara.” He anchored his hands back on her hips as he thrust in and out of her body in rough, rhythmic strokes. “I won’t let you leave my sight. Fuck, you feel so good.” She let her head fall back, giving over to the euphoria of having Connor inside her. He was so big. When he filled her, she always had a moment when she wasn’t sure she could handle it, but she ached to try. And once she succeeded in accommodating every inch of him . . . She groaned. There was nothing like it. There was certainly no one like him. He caressed every bit of her skin that he could reach, her breasts and her belly, the curves of her waist and hips, before he found her clitoris again and strummed it—fucking her with force all the while. Lara pressed back against him. If she hadn’t, the strength of his thrusts would have sent her headfirst into the wall. Still, he didn’t hold back. He simply picked up the pace and she moved with him. The push and pull of his strokes formed a rhythm she sank into. Over and over his cock sank deep before he dragged back out, sensitizing her flesh and drawing her to the edge. She groaned as he toyed with her clitoris in earnest now. “I can’t hold out. You feel so good. You’re so hot and tight around me. Come for me, princess.”
