Review | The Secret Key

Title: The Secret Key
Series: Agatha Oddly #1
Author: Lena Jones
Publisher: Harper Collins Children's Books

My rating: ★★★★☆

If you're looking for a totally fun mystery middle grade book, look no more!

The Secret Key is the very first novel in a brand new series by Lena Jones revolving around the adventures of Agatha Oddlow, a thirteen-year-old girl who's addicted to crime novels and wishes nothing more than to become a detective. And, she kind of is, already!

Due to her father's job, she lives in a small cabin in Hyde Park, which also happens to be the center of a few mysterious happenings. When things escalate and London's water supply is contaminated by a toxin, Agatha steps in to save the day!

An exceptionally-written novel, which kept you the readers in agony about what is going to happen next, how Agatha is going to get past each obstacle and what is really going on behind the scenes.
Considering this was the debut book of Lena Jones, I can't emphasize enough how impressed I was and how excitedly I'm waiting to read on in the series, as well as the future works of the author.

Our heroine is awesome, brilliant and accurately named after Agatha Christie. She is the perfect introduction to the famous crime novelist for young readers, who will grow up reading more mystery adventures!

I know, for one, I was captivated, mesmerized and set on reading the rest of Agatha Oddly's great adventures!

I would like to thank the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with an e-arc, in exchange for an honest review.

The Phantom of New York, volume 1 - Peter and the Crown
by
A.L. Janney
Genre: MG/YA Adventure
Release Date: December 2017

Summary:

'This is a story about vigilantes and magic.

My review:

This was a delightful, interesting, funny and mysterious novel, full of unique characters and a protagonist you could only love and appreciate.
There was everything included in this book. A luxurious hotel with snobbish rich boys, adorable little girls, royalty, demanding (and some times a little bit crazy) customers and a few ghosts.

Peter is a 12-year-old boy, who gets into funny, if not a little bit daring, adventures and slowly matures in front of the reader's eyes. He and his family were forced to move into The Crown when his father was threatened by a shady client. And, that's when little Peter's life literally changed overnight. He made new friends (alive or not so much), he fell in love, he learned how to box and even how to behave properly wearing a tuxedo. From that moment on, the book starts being impossible to put down, as a bigger mystery starts unveiling itself, at the same time when a vicious gang commits robberies all over New York City.

The author managed to deliver Peter's story in an amazing way, suitable for readers of all ages, and also make us really feel we are on board with all of our lovable characters' adventures.

There was also so much diversity in this book, starting from our hero who was of Greek and Italian descent, his Indian friend and his best friend who was biracial! I loved this book for that reason even more!

There is nothing better than promoting to children equality and making their role models such amazing, kind and thoughtful characters.

All in all, 5 stars for an amazing, relaxing and
at the same time mysterious and adventurous story, and a perfect read for all,
that made me wistful of New York and its amazing, full of secrets, hotel!

Prince Syrus, mage and master of the Blood Kata, wants Forest more than he's ever wanted anything. In spite of their mutual mistrust, their attraction cannot be denied. Through the danger of their mission, and the secrets they both keep, it doesn't matter what they feel. Forest is forbidden.

Excerpt:

Forest pressed her back against the cool concrete wall, wanting to remain aloof from the entity of the crowd. She chose her position in the shadows, out of the paths of the roving, multi-colored spotlights. She closed her eyes and enjoyed the feeling of the undulating human pheromones flying around on the air. At the beginning of every shift, she allowed herself a few minutes of this alien/human experience, though she didn't fully comprehend the combination of dancing, drinking, and ear-breaking sound waves. They loved it, however, and never seemed to deviate from the recipe.
These were the people she was sworn to protect. She had developed a light affection for the human race and considered them a benign, if not slightly silly, bunch of creatures. Her religious passion for her job was rooted in hatred of that which harmed the humans, not a superhero tendency to protect the weak.
Forest opened her eyes and focused all her senses to sniff out the illegal suckers that tried to sneak through the portal. She was in the zone tonight, and not for the first time did she feel that hers was the best job in existence. It was a shame she couldn’t legally kill suckers in her native world.
Over the next two hours, Forest didn’t move from the wall. She monitored the light traffic through the portal: two shifters and one elf, each of which nodded to her respectfully as they passed. Yawn. The shifters left the club to enjoy the delights of Austin’s nightlife elsewhere.
The elf would have been breaking Regia’s law had he left the club, but he dutifully seated himself at the bar and ordered a fuzzy navel. He wore a plaid, porkpie hat, pulled down over the tops of his pointed ears. Forest didn’t know him personally, but she had seen him in here before. The bartender surveyed him with narrowed eyes as the elf nervously tugged his hat down further and ordered a few more girly cocktails.
Intent on making sure that not one sucker was able to sneak past her, Forest was blindsided by the drunk bubba who had been trying to catch her eye for the last twenty minutes. He had finally decided to stagger over to hit on her.
“Hey babe, you’re too beautiful to look so lonely. How’s ‘bout I buy you a drink?”
“How’s ‘bout I call you a cab instead?” Forest mimicked his drawl.
“Only if you share it with me, Darlin.” He leaned in closer, and Forest’s throat began to sting from the noxious fume of booze mixed with his natural musk.
“While I appreciate the offer, Jethro, it seems only right to inform you that I’m not actually attractive at all. If you leaned in a little closer, you’d see that you’ve fallen victim to the effect of beer goggles. A hag like me can’t take advantage of a stud like you.”
As he leaned in, Forest instantly enlarged her nose, pockmarked her skin, evaporated her front teeth, and added a large black mole with a long hair sprouting from it for good measure.
“You’re no hag, baby! You’re the sexiest little thing in…I…uh…" He stumbled backward. “Good grief! Sorry, sorry…” he stammered, retreating. “I’ve gotta quit drinking,” he mumbled as he turned away.
Forest chuckled to herself once he absorbed back into the crowd. Being a shape shifter sometimes had unusual perks.

The heart has a mission of its own…

Wounded in more ways than one, Navy SEAL Jax Taylor only understands short-term commitments. And when he walks into the Trident Bar in Virginia Beach, beautiful bartender Peri Halstead sizes him up right away. But that doesn’t stop her from teasing him with her sultry sarcasm, or taking him home—after she finds him passed out cold in the parking lot…

Soon enough, Jax is recovering at Peri’s in return for doing some handyman work, and the sexy sparks are flying—in almost every room in the house. Peri tells herself she deserves some fun, especially now that she’s a single mom with a cheating ex to deal with. But when it’s time for her and Jax to go their separate ways, the miles between them—and the danger that’s about to touch both their lives—has them wondering if Jax can learn to love more than the mission…
excerpt

Jax climbed from the rental car. Stiff from the transatlantic trip, he limped a few steps but righted his gait before opening the heavy oak door. In his bar experiences, such an entrance usually led to a man cave.

Inside, darkness enveloped him, matching his mood. Pain meds and exhaustion made him irritable. He was still pissed about not being allowed to rejoin his team, and doubly so because TJ had a training op circumventing their party. So much for buddy reunions.

Behind the bar, a tall, lean beauty glanced up from the beer taps. The gnawing ache in his leg disappeared under scrutiny of wide, sea green eyes. Long, wavy hair

surrounded her shoulders like a lion’s mane. His fingers itched to tangle in the strands.

Other more intimate visions flitted through his mind.

Months without a woman made him a sick bastard. Probably in stark contrast to the public’s standard perception of a SEAL, but they didn’t know or understand a Special Operator’s life. What they did for love of country and their brothers in arms. For him, the best antidote after a gruesome mission was down-and-gritty sex.

Before he readjusted his sour expression, she stepped in front of him.

Her lovely gaze branded him with I got your number, sailor.

****

Peri Halstead approached her newest patron as he saddled up on a bar chair.

His steely-eyed glint hinted at danger. Most of the Trident’s patrons did. “Wow, I’ve only seen one other man stride into this place with a more pissed-off expression than yours.”

“Your ex?” Mr. Dark Blues matched her sarcasm.

She liked him already. The small scar on his chin kept him from appearing too

pretty. “Insightful. Let me guess…vodka tonic.”

He narrowed his gaze.

“Martini?” She smiled and tossed her hair over her shoulder. “You’re too GQ for

domestic beer. Heineken?”

He tightened his jaw.

She must have struck a nerve with the pretty boy comment. “Whiskey on the rocks?”

Raising a brow, he lifted his chin.

Such swagger. She slid a cocktail napkin on the bar in front of him. “You gotta be a Jack man.”

He grinned, revealing near perfect teeth.

Delighted at winning their little game, she winked and stepped away to fetch his

drink. Usually, she went for the rugged variety of handsome, but his straight nose with

slightly elevated bridge was sexy as hell. She poured him a double shot over ice and

returned, planting it in front of him.

“My buddy, TJ, said y’all have the biggest and best cheeseburgers.”

“You’re Jax?”

“Damn, a psychic bartender? Guessed my brand and my name.” He winked.

Eyes as dark blue as a stormy ocean. Lord, she needed to keep her distance with this one. “Wish I was. I’d have more money in the bank. Actually, I’ve seen the picture he carries of you guys partying after BUD/S graduation. TJ talks about you often. Are you here for training?”

“Currently in a holding pattern.” With a roll of his shoulders, he scowled and

thumped his glass down.

Not linebacker thick, he was more like a running back—built for speed. “They call

you GQ.” A Texan not rugged enough to be branded Cowboy and too handsome for Tex.

He sipped his drink, then cleared his throat. “Did TJ share my birthday, too?”

“No. Just a story about you chasing some bad guys through the streets of a South American country in your birthday suit.” Peri grinned.

“Touché.” He held up his glass and shotgunned the remainder of his whiskey.

Usually immune to her bar patrons, she was blindsided with a lust she’d lidded since her daughter was born. “Where’s TJ? Shouldn’t your buddy be showing you the hot spots?”

“Jumping out of a C-130.” He fiddled with his napkin.

“So, you just returned stateside today?”

He checked his expensive, matte-black, multi-function watch that would have

marked him special-ops without their previous conversation. “About two hours ago.”

“Long mission?”

“Months.” He glanced around the bar, then to her.

“It’s early. You still have time to remedy your just-back virgin status.” She smirked.

His gaze burned into her like a blue flame. “Is that an offer?”

EXCERPT:

Underground Ward, the Radcliffe Lunatic Asylum, Oxford
The writing on the wall says it’s January 14. I am not sure what year. I haven’t been sure of many things lately, but I’m wondering if it’s my handwriting I’m looking at.
There is an exquisite-looking key drawn underneath the date. It’s carved with a sharp instrument, probably a broken mirror. I couldn’t have written this. I’m terrified of mirrors. They love to call it Catoptrophobia around here.
Unlike those of the regular patients in the asylum, my room is windowless, stripped down to a single mattress in the middle, a sink, and bucket for peeing—or puking—when necessary. The tiles on the floor are black and white squares, like a chessboard. I never step on black. Always white. Again, I’m not sure why.
The walls are smeared with a greasy, pale green everywhere. I wonder if it’s the previous patient’s brains spattered all over from shock therapy.
In the Radcliffe Lunatic Asylum, politely known as the Warneford Hospital, the doctors have a fondness for shock therapy. They love watching patients with bulging eyes and shivering limbs begging for relief from the electricity. It makes me question who is really mad here.
It’s been a while since I was sent to shock therapy myself. Dr. Tom Truckle, my supervising physician, said I don’t need it anymore, particularly after I stopped mentioning Wonderland. He told me that I used to talk about it all the time; a dangerous place I claim I had been whisked away to, when my elder sister lost me when I was seven.
Truth is, I don’t remember this Wonderland they are talking about. I don’t even know why I am here. My oldest vivid memory is from a week ago. Before that, it’s all a purple haze.
I have only one friend in this asylum. It’s not a doctor or a nurse. And it’s not a human. It doesn’t hate, envy, or point a finger at you. My friend is an orange flower I keep in a pot—a Tiger Lily I can’t live without. I keep it safe next to a small crack in the wall, where a single ray of sun sneaks through for only ten minutes a day. It might not be enough light to grow a flower, but my Tiger Lily is a tough girl.
Each day I save half of the water they give me for my flower. As for me, better thirsty than mad. My orange flower is also my personal rain check for my sanity. If I talk to her and she doesn’t reply, I know I am not hallucinating. If she talks back to me, all kinds of nonsense starts to happen. Insanity prevails. There must be a reason why I am here. It doesn’t mean I will easily give in to such a fate.
“Alice Pleasance Wonder. Are you ready?” The nurse knocks with her electric prod on my steel door. Her name is Waltraud Wagner. She is German. Everything she says sounds like a threat, and she smells like smoke. My fellow mad people say she is a Nazi—that she used to kill her own patients back in Germany. “Get avay vrom za dor. I’m coming in,” she demands.
As I listen to the rattling of her large keychain, my heart pounds in my chest. The turn of the key makes me want to swallow. When the door opens, all I can think of is choking her before she begins to hurt me. Sadly, her neck is too thick for my nimble hands. I stare at her almost-square figure for a moment. Everything about her is four sizes too big. All except her feet, which are as small as mine. My sympathies, little feet.
“Time for your daily ten-minute break upstairs.” She approaches me with a straitjacket, a devilish grin on her face. I never get out. My ward is underground, and I’m only allowed to take my break in another empty ward upstairs where patients love to play soccer.
A big, muscled warden stands behind Waltraud. Thomas Ogier. He is bald, and has an angry-red face and a silver tooth he likes to flash whenever he sees me. His biceps are the size of my head. I have a hard time believing he was ever a four-pound baby.
“Slide your arms into the jacket,” Waltraud demands in her German accent, a cigarette puckered between her lips. “Slow and easy, Alice.” She nods at Warden Ogier, in case I misbehave.
I comply obediently and stretch out my arms for her to do whatever she wants. Waltraud twists my right arm slightly and checks the tattoo on my arm. It’s the only tattoo I have. It’s a handwritten sentence that looks like a thick armband from afar. Waltraud feels the need to read it aloud: “‘I can’t go back to yesterday, because I was a different person then.'” I was told I had written it while still believing in Wonderland. “That Alice in Wonderland has really messed with your head,” she says as she puffs smoke into my face.
The tattoo and Waltraud’s mocking is the least of my concerns right now. I let her tie me up, and while she does, I close my eyes. I imagine I am a sixteenth-century princess, some kind of lucky Cinderella, being squeezed into a corset by my chain-smoking servant in a fairy tale castle above ground, just about to go meet my prince charming. Such imagery always helps me breathe. I once thought that it was hope that saved the day, not sanity. I need to cool down before I begin my grand escape.

Exclusive Excerpt: He leaned into the door frame and folded his arms across his chest. Green eyes sparkled at me with amusement as I stared, and my skin must have flushed three shades of red. He cocked his eyebrow up and his lips curved into a delicious, lazy smile. I took in his strong chiseled jaw and his messy, damp, jet black hair. Probably just out of the shower. Him naked… just damn. “You’re late, and I don’t like waiting.” He moved aside for me to enter. Late? Kept him waiting? I tried to snap out of my mesmerized stupor. “Honey, come in. I don’t bite. Unless you’re into that.” He dragged his hand through his hair. The song changed and the tune was slow and sexy. Like the fly drawn to the spider web, I stepped inside. Finding my wits, I managed to ask, “Is Colin here?” “No threesome tonight, honey. Just me and you. The money’s on the bar in an envelope. Once we’re done, you can see yourself out. I only want to fuck. I don’t want to get personal. This is just a fuck. Understand?” Money… Only want to fuck… Just a fuck… He thinks I’m a hooker! I gazed around the room and stared at the thick white envelope on the bar. So thick, I wondered just how much he was paying. “It’s all there.” His voice sounded cocky. I held back a laugh and smiled. A no strings, carefree, reckless night was exactly what I wanted. What I needed. Let the games begin…because, I’m all in.

It's time to take it to the next level.

Heath Lancaster's happy to be on the practice squad of a professional football team, but instead of a lucky break taking him to the next level, a league-wide strike leaves him unemployed. Until he finds a new semi-pro league in Virginia Beach, where a bikini-clad hottie snags one of his passes on the beach and offers him a tour of the area . . .

A scandalous affair turned Jordan Kelly into media fodder--and in no hurry to get back into the dating game. But the easy going tight end of the new Triton's team unleashes an inhibited wild streak in her and has her tempting him with a game of her own. But when she finds out who the owner of the Tritons is, she's wondering if she'll repeat her mistakes . . .
excerpt

Heat, ninety-percent humidity, pain and exhaustion. None of it mattered. Football fueled Heath Lancaster’s blood. Sweat streamed down his face as he drove the sled another five yards.

After six grueling weeks, he’d made the cut to play on Virginia Beach’s new semi-pro team. Over the grunts and groans of the offensive line, a whistle blew, stopping them mid-step.

Heath yanked off his helmet then grabbed one of the water lines from the portable station. Cooling H2O washed over his head and face before he gunned a stream down his parched throat.

“Wanna hit the beach after lunch?” Dugan McKenzie, drank from another hose.

Dugan ran through a string of women the first couple of weeks of camp until he nearly washed out. Performance now improved, and on the roster, he was on the hunt again. This time, Heath planned to join him, imagining cool waves and a sea of curves wearing bikinis. “Sure. Meet you back at the house.”

After practice, he showered and donned a pair of board shorts and a Tritons t-shirt. He climbed into his open-door Jeep and clicked on his seat belt as his cell phone went off. For the first time in weeks, he answered without checking the display.

“Hey, babe,” Sandy cooed.

Crap! After a couple of weeks without calls, he figured she’d given up. “How’s Ben?”

What else should he say to the woman he’d found with her tongue down a friend’s throat? Make that former friend.

“You misunderstood, Heath. He was inconsolable after Marcie left him.”

“Yeah right, so you were just giving him a little mouth to mouth resuscitation?” Silence filled his ear. “Ancient history and I’m a time zone away now.”

Click. He accelerated the Jeep out of the sports complex. It had taken weeks to gain some distance from her manipulations. After her call, the commercial Virginia Beach oceanfront seemed intrusive.

A June sun blazed brightly in a cloudless sky while he cruised down Sand Fiddler Lane. Ninety degrees was cool compared to summer heat in Texas. When he’d signed the six-month lease on the house, the realtor touted Sandbridge as a locals’ beach.

He pulled into the driveway and found Dugan beneath the stilted house, applying a coat of wax to the chrome of his Fat Boy Harley. He and his linebacker buddy had scraped through college classes but shined on the gridiron. They’d landed on the practice squad of a pro team in Texas a couple of years ago, but in March the league went on strike.

Dugan paused from his task and squinted at him with brown eyes. “You look pissed. We still going to check out the local talent?”

“You go ahead. Think I’ll just go snooze at Sandbridge.” He grabbed his bag from the Jeep.

She called again?” He continued buffing the red metallic gas tank to a high sheen.

Through his sunglasses, Heath leveled a hard stare at Dugan. He’d almost been glad for the league’s strike just to get away from Sandy.

“You’re better off without her, man. She was dragging you down.” He tossed the rag into the bucket of cleaning supplies.

Heath regretted playing her stupid mutt for months. “Think she’s figured out her new dog isn’t as easy to train. She might be having second thoughts.”

“Hope you’re not going to roll over if she decides to head this way.” Dugan had a gritty determination and was known as a man who never got involved.

Heath intended on picking up similar habits since his defunct relationship. “Those days are done, bro.” He reassured Dugan before climbing the stairs.

After snagging a brew from the fridge, he sat on one of the bar chairs. Through the sliding glass door, the blue Atlantic looked cool and inviting after his hard practice. This view had sold him on signing the lease.

The house’s central living area and kitchen with bar combo separated the bedrooms and included a bathroom on each side which appealed to their bachelor-style living. Plus he didn’t have to hear Dugan when he had a chick stay over.

He pulled out his phone and blocked Sandy’s cell number. With a new road ahead, he put her in his “done and moved on” category.
