Eighteen-year-old Brenna Whit is entering college as a freshman and starting to meet new people, but she hides a dark secret. Because of an accident that happened three years ago, her spirit wanders the Fade whenever she falls asleep. It's something she wants to keep hidden from the world, but when she sees someone watching her in spirit form, she fears the secret's out. With new friends, possibly new enemies, school, and a new crush, Brenna has too much to worry about for just her freshman year of college.

My Review:
One is the eternal question human beings revolve around:
What happens after death.

Well, I have to admit, this brand new series by Sarah Lampkin is giving a quite interesting interpretation of what exists beyond our dreams and imagination. And, she did make sure the plot accompanying that interpretation would be exciting and intriguing.

But, first things first. Let's start with our main character, Brenna. A former party-girl who used to enjoy life a little too much, until that fateful day of her death. Although, she managed to force her spirit back to her body, the Fade, the spiritual plane that exists out there, never really let her fully escape. In fact, every time she fall asleep she returns back to it in spirit form.
And, she never encountered any problems. Before now, that is.
Damon, the irritating guy she met at college is just the first of her problems, which seem to just escalate from there.

Brenna is a strong heroine, with lots of sarcasm and attitude, but not in an over-the-top and annoying way. She is very proud and doesn't like asking for help. In other words? If you're looking for a heroine that is no damsel in distress, look no further. This is the book for you.

The setting of this novel is in a college, a fact that I particularly enjoyed as I love reading or watching movies about US colleges, that are so different than the ones I'm used to.
And, of course, I couldn't forget mentioning the amazing characters surrounding Brenna, all of whom we're meeting slowly, gradually, at the same pace that our heroine does, making them all more lovable, and feeling like they are actually our friends and college acquaintances.

All in all, 4 stars for a book very carefully crafted and well-written by the author.
I can't wait to get my hands on the second installation of the series.

About Sarah:
A native of Richmond, Virginia, Sarah Lampkin is a 2015 graduate from Lynchburg College with a master’s degree in English. Since graduation, Sarah moved to Northern Virginia to work in the IT field as a Technical Writer while continuing her research for her graduate school thesis. When she isn’t work, Sarah continues her Celtic mythology research and Gaelic studies, while working on the Dead Dreamer series.
Although she currently lives in Northern Virginia, Sarah frequently travels back home to Richmond to visit family, friends, and her godchildren. During the winter months, she is in Richmond more frequently to spend time in the woods hunting and contemplating the meaning of life. She doesn’t always succeed in both endeavors, but the music of nature is worth it for peace of mind.
In her free time, she likes to play RPG video games, and rock climbing. To make sure she can make the most out of her day, she wakes up at 4am every morning to work on her fitness, so in the evening she has time to continue writing. Her passion for writing has been around since high school where she wrote her first short story. It continued as she worked towards her bachelor’s degree, and that is where the Dead Dreamer series began. Although only self- published via online, Sarah’s dream is to write for a living and continue to create fictional worlds where her mind can reside.
Her work mainly focuses on Celtic themes, mixed with elements from the spiritual world. And her characters always have a flair of attitude and sarcasm because writing damsels in distress is something she just can’t do.

Goodreads blurb: This is not about blood or love. This is about treason.

Nearly a year has passed since Amani and the rebels won their epic battle at Fahali. Amani has come into both her powers and her reputation as the Blue-Eyed Bandit, and the Rebel Prince's message has spread across the desert - and some might say out of control. But when a surprise encounter turns into a brutal kidnapping, Amani finds herself betrayed in the cruellest manner possible.

Stripped of her powers and her identity, and torn from the man she loves, Amani must return to her desert-girl's instinct for survival. For the Sultan's palace is a dangerous one, and the harem is a viper's nest of suspicion, fear and intrigue. Just the right place for a spy to thrive... But spying is a dangerous game, and when ghosts from Amani's past emerge to haunt her, she begins to wonder if she can trust her own treacherous heart.

My Review:

Alwyn Hamilton is not just a talented storyteller. She is a graphic scene maker and a director.
She doesn't just describe the situations in which her protagonist finds herself, she makes you feel you are an part of the whole scene, like you are actually in Amani's shoes.
And, I deeply admire her for that and the deeply fascinating world she has created.

Amani's story made me fall instantly in love with her whole world and the powerful creatures that created it, from the first few chapters of the very first book in the series.

In this second novel of the story, we even learn more about the Djinns and their half-human offsprings.

We also get to have an insight in the ways of the harem and the mind of the brutal and intriguing Sultan who claimed his throne after treacherous and murderous acts all these years ago.

Amani finds herself all alone in the most dangerous situation she has encountered yet.
But, she manages to remain the same brave and strong girl I deeply loved in the first book.

The deaths and sacrifices are, yet again, not missing from this action-filled book and the way it ends, it makes me crave the next and final installation in the trilogy even more anxiously.

Hamilton's way of writing is once again magical, and it really makes me wonder why this amazing series is not even more widely popular:

- Amazing, brave, strong and intelligent protagonist - Check!
- Swoon-worthy, sexy and protective romantic interest - Check!
- Rich of amazing and deep supporting characters, willing to sacrifice themselves and fight for their cause and their country - Check!
- Lots of action and a healthy dose of romance to keep things hot in every aspect - Check!
- Amazing and original world, filled with people with unique and fascinating powers - Check!

After all these elements, how can you not love such a marvelous piece of work?

All in all, wishing I could give more than 5 stars
for the second book of what is shaping to be
one of my most loved series of all times.

Goodreads Blurb:
" Courage comes from a shadowed place in our hearts; a blurred line that straddles love and sheer stupidity.
To seventeen-year-old Ava, wild woodcats, hungry stragglers, and simple-minded townsfolk are the evils she’s grown accustomed to. But when Ethan, an unusual man with eyes of smoke and fire opal, enters her world she quickly understands that there are worse things out there than drunken men and carnivorous forest creatures. She’s a specialised liar and a hell of a fighter, but against a group of animalistic men called Berserkers she struggles to survive the encounter as the desperate swing of a dagger is all it takes to change her life for good.
Half-dead and hunted by the Berserker’s leader when he forms a monstrous obsession with her, Ava escapes his pursuit in an unfamiliar land full of impossible creatures, unlikely allies, and the man she doesn’t know whether to kiss or kill.
But after dreadful news of her missing brother surfaces, Ava becomes more involved in the centuries-long war and begins to unravel the reasons behind her relentless nightmares, discovering truths long-buried in a violent history of love, loss and betrayal. "

My Rating: ✿✿✿

My Review:

Trapped in Silver is a brand new release, the first book in a very promising new series and the debut novel of the author!

It is so beautifully written, capturing our attention right from the beginning and making us anxious to reveal all the secrets and mysteries revolving around Ava, Ethan, and everyone involved with them! And, believe me, the story is rich with them, that you constantly feel like you just have to keep reading, to find out about everything!

That's what happened to me.
Ava's story captured my full attention, right from the start, with her personality and strength and bravery, playing a huge role in my respect of it.

I love reading about fierce protagonists, that can embrace their weaknesses and make them their strengths. And, Ava, was just that.

There is the mystery of her visions, her locket, her family history, her foster brother!
And, then, there's Ethan, who is a moving mystery himself!
Not to mention, so many other interesting characters, that I deeply liked and constantly wanted to see more about! Like Ric and Lavender!

All of them, amazing characters, with carefully thought and described personalities.

And, don't even get me started on Ava and Ethan's interactions!
I actually wanted to shudder myself at certain points!

Another aspect of this book and the way its story unfolded, that I loved, was the fact that the mysteries surrounding the characters were revealed in such a way that it felt completely natural. The way it's supposed to be, when the heroes get more used to each other, and start confessing their secrets.

For something less that half of the book, I wasn't even sure what kind of creatures most of them were!
Although, I had my suspicions, only because I am a part of the original review team, so I had a rough idea of two of the main species of importance!

The adventures of Ava were numerous, and the dangers she was called to face, were to certainly give me nightmares, too, if I were her, even if I didn't have such occurrences before!
And, the moment you thought that her life would get a little less dangerous, suddenly all hell would break loose again, and new challenges would arise!
This fact made me be constantly alert and I just loved it!

All in all, 4.5 stars for a wonderful debut novel,
the start of a promising new series,
filled with so much adventure and action,
that made me completely anxious and unable to put this book down!

Review - Throne of Glass (ToG #1) by Sarah J. Maas

Click on the picture to get to my post on my Bookstagram.
After all the hype surrounding Sarah J. Maas and her books, and after finding out about the fact that the main heroine of this book is a brave and badass assassin, I just knew I had to try this series out!

So, I bought this book and the first book of the A Court of Thorns and Roses series.
I decided to start reading this book, though, because, from my experience, the first works of an author are indicative of their personal writing style and their imagination, but not always as personalized as their later works.
Yes, you got that right, I wanted to take a taste of the author's writing before trying out her latest books!

And, I have to admit that this book did not disappoint me. Quite the opposite, to be exact!
Mrs. Maas writing style was quite unique. While reading this book I kept thinking that this is her first work and sensed that some things needed a more personal touch. But exactly the fact that this was the first book she probably ever published, it delivered amazingly!

I kept missing something, which led me to not categorize this book as a favorite of mine, even if I gave it 5 stars!
But throughout my reading of this book, I could almost feel all the potential this series and this author has. And, considering the fact that I have this book in my TBR pile for quite a few years, but hadn't even realized the hype all around it, this potential might have been exploited in the following books of the series.

Celaena, the main heroine, is indeed a very brave and badass young woman who, orphaned at a very tender age, was taken under the care of the King of Assassins, who made her the best and most known assassin of Erilea.
The protagonist is really a character worth reading about, and I immensely enjoyed knowing her thoughts and reading about her adventures.

The story starts with her as a slave of the tyrannical King of Erilea, making us really crave to know what made her the best assassin, and also how she was captured!
While a few hints of her past are given, I came to realize that we really know next to nothing about her previous life, before she arrived at the court of the King to serve as his son's Champion!

Celaena is given a choice, to either become the Crown Prince's Champion and win in a contest of assassins, thieves and soldiers, where the winner will become the King's assassin, or keep on being a slave in Endovier and ultimately die.
A quite interesting storyline, that narrates the dilemma an assassin sworn to get revenge on the King whose orders killed her people, is showed with.

While reading this book, I had the strong urge to share a few comments of my progress, something I rarely do. If you have noticed those comments, you will know that I showed a preference for one of the male heroes, quite early on the book.
That person is Chaol, Captain of The King's Guard and childhood friend of the Crown Prince, Dorian.
While Dorian is describe as, oh, so handsome and glamorous, and everything, Chaol has his own qualities, which I believe are better in a person. Dorian was also a reader, and was said to be able to converse with Celaena for multiple hours, about a variety of subjects. But this was the only thing he had going for him, in my opinion!
Chaol was loyal and found it difficult to trust an assassin, who killed people, a fact that went against all of his instincts of guarding, even if by the end he had grown to be much warmer towards her.

I don't particularly enjoy love triangles, but in this book it wasn't so apparent. Mainly because Celaena was quite oblivious of one of the two heroes' qualities and feelings, for the best part of the book.

I thoroughly enjoyed the protagonist's friendship with Nehemia, a Princess from Eyllwe. Their relationship was tested quite a few times throughout the book. But, Nehemia also proved to be a brave young woman.

I also loved the fantasy aspects of this book! There was suspense, mystery, mixed with some magic, magical beings and portals to other, dark worlds. There were numerous villains, but quite a few unexpected friendships, too! I would definitely love to see more of Nox in the future!

All in all, 5 stars for a great start to a series that
seems to have so much potential to become an
even greater adventure of a badass heroine.

It was about birds and frankly, it wasn't very good, but it sparked a love of literature. In middle school she spent her free time locked in her room, writing her first young adult novel. This thoroughly solidifying her status as a class-A nerd. She currently works as a high school English teacher, a job that she loves even when it exhausts her.  When her best friend Heather calls in the middle of the night, Becca Dalcourt assumes it’s the usual drama. Wrong. When she risks her life to save a dissident, she learns her mother isn’t the only one with secrets – and the plot she uncovers will threaten the lives of the people she loves most. For Becca, it’s no longer just a choice between risking execution and ignoring the regime’s crimes; she has to decide whose life to save and whose to sacrifice. It’s easy to be a hero when you can save the world, but what about when all you can do is choose how you live in it? The Torturer’s Daughter is a story about ordinary life amidst the realities of living under an oppressive regime… and the extraordinary courage it takes to do what’s right in a world gone wrong.

Heartbeat Thief

The Heartbeat Thief by Ash Krafton

Haunted by a crushing fear of death, a young Victorian woman discovers the secret of eternal youth—she must surrender her life to attain it, and steal heartbeats to keep it. Poe meets Austen in this haunting tale of death and endless devotion… Being the most beautiful debutante in 1860’s Surrey isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be. Senza Fyne knows all too well the expectations set upon a young Victorian woman—and she also knows that, in one fell swoop, death can just whisk it all away. When she meets the mysterious and mystical Mr. Knell, she is offered the chance to escape the chains of Life and Death and to enjoy the bliss of youth and beauty for all eternity. But that takes magic…and a steep price. She’d have to surrender her life to gain an eternity and she’d have to steal the heartbeats of others in order to keep it. She has everything to gain if she succumbs to his spell…but knows not what she might lose. It’s a little bit Jane Austen, a little bit Edgar Allan Poe, and a whole lot of stealing heartbeats in order to stay young and beautiful forever. From the posh London season to the back alleys of Whitechapel, across the Channel, across the Pond, across the seas of Time…How far will Senza Fyne go to avoid Death?

A.J.  Author A.J. Crafton The Heartbeat Thief is the first release for AJ Krafton, a New Adult speculative fiction author from the Pennsylvania coal region. If she’s not writing, it’s probably because she’s distracted by all the cool junk on her desk or by the stacks of books that have grown up around it. She also writes novels, short fiction, and poetry for adult audiences as Ash Krafton.

Praise for The Heartbeat Thief "It’s a supernatural story, but it doesn’t rely on the conventions and themes that have gone before it. To be honest, when I picked it up I was expecting witches and/or vampires, but I found something else entirely. I loved the story and the concept." "True to its word, "The Heartbeat Thief" is part Jane Austen, part Edgar Allen Poe. The author revives the best of the style of writing found in the classics: the introspect of characters, lovely allusions comparing characters to nature and life, beautiful alliteration and prose. Mixed with this is a deep foreboding of death, a macabre sensation that follows Senza throughout the story." "Beautiful imagery and language shape this intriguing story that spoke to me about the meaning of maturity and purpose in life. Lovely!"

“I told you I didn’t need a man to feel complete. I meant that.” I’m going to make her come so hard she’s going to know what she’s been missing. I stroke the back of my hand down her cheek. Soft. Smooth. Delicate. “You’re beautiful, Wren.” Most of the women I’ve been with are too skinny, and they hide behind masks of cosmetics. But not Wren. She’s an all-natural woman. She’s very different from Bridgette, yet alike in many ways. Both make me laugh. Both put me at ease. Both are so genuine. I rub her hip and there’s actually something there to grab instead of skin-covered bone. Skinny isn’t attractive to me. I like curves and shape. Wren is everything I like in a woman. She strokes my face again, running the tips of her fingers through my facial hair. “I love this, Brou. It’s my idea of manly beauty.” I’m used to being called Boudreaux. But I can get used to Brou if it’s coming from her. “Manly beauty.” This is the second time she’s made a reference about me being manly. Makes me wonder if she’s ever been with a man she considers masculine. Well, I’m going to show her how much of a man I am. And not just once. I lower myself until I’m hovering over her. I press my lips to the side of her neck as I grasp the back of her thigh and bend it at the knee. That’s it, baby. Wrap it around me. I glide my hand up the back of her smooth leg until it’s inside her shorts. And panties. Same song from last night. Second verse. But it’s palm against bare ass this time. I wonder what she’d do if my fingers left the safety of her ass cheek and moved to that sensitive place between her legs. Let’s find out. It’s been a long time for Wren. I don’t want to rush this so I move slowly, gliding my hand up to her waist before moving it lower. She jolts when I touch her groin. “Sorry. I’m terribly ticklish there.” Duly noted. I’ll use that to my advantage later. I move my hand away from the bend of her leg closer to her center. “What about that? Better?” “Yes.” The single word comes out in a soft whisper. Time to take her breath away, as promised. She pants as the tips of my fingers stroke her through the wet crotch of her panties. I’ve barely touched her and she’s drenched. Physical proof of her arousal and desire for me. Fucking beautiful. I push her panties aside and drag my finger up her wet center. She jolts when I graze her clit. Given it’s been a long time, she’ll be more sensitive than ever. That’s going to make this even hotter. I take my hand out of her panties and suck her slick moisture from my fingers. “Mmm . . . you are delicious. I can’t wait to taste you fully.” She reaches up a nd rubs my bottom lip. “You have a dirty mouth.” “I have a greedy mouth. Lucky you.”

GENRE: Paranormal erotic romance

BLURB:

Museum director Tasha Banner needs a miracle. Without a great deal of luck and even more money, the pioneer museum will close. But when they demonstrate a Scottish New Year’s tradition, a tall, dark, and yummy stranger walks through the door. Have the faeries sent her a miracle wrapped around the man of her dreams or will altering time bring disaster to them all?

Blacksmith Dougal MacBride walks into his home after a long day and finds strangers celebrating Hogmanay when it’s just days before Christmas. Confused beyond belief and incredibly aroused by the curvaceous bundle in front of his hearth, he is torn between the need to return to his time or remain in the present with the woman who may be his soul mate.

EXCERPT:

“Mac, you can’t be serious.” Tasha looked at him. He definitely looked the part with his clothing and speech but that was impossible. “If he was really Dougal MacBride, he’d be 200 years old.

Look at him. He’s a thirty-year-old gym jock.”

“A what?” asked Dougal.

“What if he is really from the past?” Mac lowered her voice and shrugged. “We wished for help and he showed up.”

Tasha glanced at Dougal. He did look like he belonged in this log cabin. “He can’t be.”

“You have to admit, he looks and sounds authentic enough.”

Every time she looked at him, Tasha wanted to push him onto the rope bed and ride the hell out of him. “So do people in the movies, but they aren’t real either.”

“’Tis rude to be talking about me while I’m standing in front of ye.” Dougal glowered at them.

Mac pulled Tasha to her feet and led her across the room toward Dougal. “Mr. MacBride, I’m Mackenzie Smith, Mac for short, and this is Tasha Banner.” She extended her hand to Dougal. “Pleased to meet you.”

Dougal glanced down at Mac’s hand but didn’t take it.

Mac dropped her hand to her side when he failed to grasp it. “We, Tasha and I, wished for the faeries to help us save the village museum and you walked through the door. The faeries have smiled on us this fine day.” “Mac stop,” said Tasha.

MY REVIEW:

When Tasha makes a wish to the fairies, in order for them to help her save the town's museum, she doesn't expect that miracles can happen during Christmas time!

Dougal the Blacksmith has been trying to avoid wedding the widow that has been courting her, wishing for her to leave him be. But, one night, when he walks into his home, a bunch of outrageously dressed strangers, Tasha included, is there to celebrate with him Hogmanay.

Soon, it becomes apparent to Tasha that this might just be the original Dougal MacBride, from the 19th century!

Just like the title suggests, a deep attraction and a passion that knows no boundaries of space and time soon starts to evolve between the two characters.

Will Dougal be willing to return back to his time if that means he is going to leave behind Tasha, the only woman that, in their short time together, has understood him more than anyone?

A very original story, that was hot, delightful and funny all at once!

The characters were so realistic, and their reactions to the outrageous events that unfolded in their lives were straight up hilarious at times!
I found myself trying to pronounce the sentences in my head, in the exact way Dougal's accent must have been heard.

This read got me very excited, and I loved it even more because it took place around Christmas time!
I would only love for it to be more extended, so I could get a little more of the main characters' interesting and steamy interactions!

All in all, 4 stars to an absolutely lovely
Christmas time-travel miracle!
