Book Review | The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
The Night Circus
by Erin Morgenstern

The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night.

But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway: a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will. Despite themselves, however, Celia and Marco tumble headfirst into love - a deep, magical love that makes the lights flicker and the room grow warm whenever they so much as brush hands.

True love or not, the game must play out, and the fates of everyone involved, from the cast of extraordinary circus performers to the patrons, hang in the balance, suspended as precariously as the daring acrobats overhead.

Written in rich, seductive prose, this spell-casting novel is a feast for the senses and the heart.

My Book Review

The Circus arrives without warning...

This was my 700th read and what a magical, precious story it turned out to be.
Not to mention, the perfect Hallowe'en read.

The Night Circus narrated the story of The Night Circus, a magical circus where an even more magical competition was hosted, unbeknown to its members. That wasn't a simple contest, however, but a fight to death between Celia and Marco. At least, that was until the two youths fell madly in love.

There were so many things I deeply loved in this book.
For one, the writing style, so lyrical and easily flowing, that one could describe it even magical! Each chapter was small and quick making you part of the action and unable to put it down.

The characters were even more precious than the book, and I loved them all, getting attached even to the ones who were troublesome. We start the book by getting to know Celia and Marco as they grow up, across the years, and soon we get acquainted to other significant characters for the storyline, even if we don't realize their importance right away.

The magic system of this story was extremely unique and unusual, as it featured magic that could be actually taught, which I found a fascinating aspect, and now I wish for someone to teach me, too!

If there was one thing that mildly threw me off were the lengthy descriptions, which were quite often but not present in every chapter. They made the book feel especially slow in the beginning, although, that, thankfully, changed the more we proceeded into the story and its protagonists.

To sum upThe Night Circus blew me away and surpassed my expectations, just like the Circus brought everyone together and made so many members of the public fiercely love it.

The last 3 pages even gave me goosebumps...

My review:

I don't know where to start from with this review.
After finishing this book, my feelings and my thoughts were literally all over the place.
And, I finally knew for certain that I did the right thing by stalling in starting to read this book until my exams had passed. Because, when I started it, oh boy, I just never seemed able to put it down. Like, ever. Again. Ahh.

Anyway, I should probably stop rambling and start a proper review.

I would like to begin from a comparison with the first book in the series, ACOTAR*. This book, I really didn't care for it for about the first 200 pages, as I explained in my review of it. And, I wasn't entirely at fault there, if I say so myself, because, honestly, it was like a prologue to the whole epic-ness that followed in ACOMAF**. Like, literally the lengthiest prologue I've ever read, but still.
The thing is that I didn't particularly care for almost anything for the biggest part of the book, and what bugged me the most, was that I did not really care for the protagonist, Feyre. When that happens, I find it really hard to love a book. In fact, I only really liked Tamlin. I might even say I loved him and found him utterly adorable.

Oh boy, was I wrong... oh boy...

ACOMAF came and just flipped my whole world around. And, trust me, I had seen how much everyone raved about Tamlin, and Rhysand, and Feyre (I mean, ACOWAR*** and even ACOFAS**** are even out, and I just finished the second book, so...). So, I was already suspicious that something is going to happen, and I was extra ready to defend Tamlin and protest against anything that attempts to prove my feelings for characters wrong.

I am not sure as to whether the following could count as spoilers, as I detail a bit the beginning, but it might spoil an important aspect of Feyre's romantic relationships, so proceed with caution!

I realized something was wrong between my previous couple, Tamlin and Feyre, right from the very first pages (if not the very first lines). When the heroine woke up in the middle of the night to vomit, after another horrible nightmare, and noticed that Tamlin did not even stir, even if she was not certain that he was asleep.
When similar behaviour continued, where they just shoved everything under the rug and refused to acknowledge their individual, as well as interpersonal, problems, I knew that this relationship was doomed. Any similar relationship would be, not jut Tamlin and Feyre's but just saying.

And then... then...

So many conflicted feelings, so much inner turmoil, so many questions about everyone's behaviours and motivations, and mostly? So. Much. Adorableness! And, well, sexiness, too.

And, I won't even talk about Velaris and the fact that I felt my heart being ripped out and then put back into its place at the end...

I really really do not want to go into too many details, because I would hate to spoil the crucial parts of this book. I want everyone to feel all these feelings I felt while reading this book.
I mean, as I am not blind and everyone has been raving for years in bookstagram about it, I knew that something is going to change between Feyre and Rhysand.
And, I might also add that Rhys brings out the best in Feyre. A few chapters into the book I started feeling like Feyre is indeed a heroine, and not just a character whose story is being narrated to us, neutrally and from a distant point of view (even if it is in the first person) - much like I had during the most part of ACOTAR.

But, I never thought it would come to a point where it would make that much sense to me. Where I would not only support, but love their relationship so much.
A point, even, where this book became one of my favorite reads.

Because this is a book I am DEFINITELY reading again. Once I'm through with ACOWAR and ACOFAS, I will start the series again. Because knowing now so many things I didn't before, I will even gladly read the first book (most likely skim through the first two parts and read the rest word by word, but still...).

Ah, overall, what an experience... Off to start ACOWAR now!!

All in all, 6/5 stars to this masterpiece, because literally,
I do not even care if the rest of the series is not as good as this book,
ACOMAF earned its rightful  place in my heart and in my favorites' list,
and can never be budged down from there.

I Needed to Win.
They Needed to Die.

Sallot Leon is a thief, and a good one at that. But gender fluid Sal wants nothing more than to escape the drudgery of life as a highway robber and get closer to the upper-class—and the nobles who destroyed their home.

When Sal steals a flyer for an audition to become a member of The Left Hand—the Queen’s personal assassins, named after the rings she wears—Sal jumps at the chance to infiltrate the court and get revenge.

But the audition is a fight to the death filled with clever circus acrobats, lethal apothecaries, and vicious ex-soldiers. A childhood as a common criminal hardly prepared Sal for the trials. And as Sal succeeds in the competition, and wins the heart of Elise, an intriguing scribe at court, they start to dream of a new life and a different future, but one that Sal can have only if they survive.

⤞ MY REVIEW ⤝

Admittedly, this is one of those stories that I started and wasn't really sure I would like.
Because it is a controversial book. And, unfortunately, I am not used to reading that many novels who share this trait. But, that would never really stop me from reading a book, unless the storytelling or the way the book was written was painful to me.
Fortunately, this book had neither characteristic.

In fact, I so enjoyed this story, that I found myself more and more immersed into it, despite my initial hesitation. The plot had everything, from honor to vengeance, from (sometimes a little raw) violence to heartwarming romance, all the way to an agonizing cliffhanger.

Sal, our protagonist, was brilliant, honest and even kind in an honorable way.
His/her/their quest for avenging the death of all Nacean people through various ways, was the focus of the book. And, I found myself empathizing with this goal. For Nacea had been the victim of vicious shadows and the even more vicious warlocks who had created them.

It was such an easy read, and I am anxious to find out more about what happens next to Sal and to a particular other person I grew to love through the protagonist's eyes. Although, I have to admit, there are plenty more characters that grew fond in my heart through the struggles and pains they endured during this book.

My overall advice to everyone thinking about picking up this book is this:

Do not be put off reading the controversial blurb. This is the second book I've read this year that deals with controversy around gender identity and both of them haven't failed to amaze me with their awesome plot and unique qualities.
If you like the rest of the plot and you only hesitate because of that, please don't. You really won't regret picking this book up.

All in all, 3,5 stars for a book that was controversial and I loved every part of it,
even if it had a little bit more violence and fighting than I would have liked otherwise.

My Rating: ✿✿✿

My Review:

Most definitely one of the best books I read this year!!!

Extraordinary People was a book that I picked up because of the Crime Marathon and didn't really think that I would completely and totally fall for!

It was incredibly well-written and genius!

The story revolved around our main character's, Enzo's, ambition to find out if one of the most famous disappearances in Paris' history was a murder. With the help of a journalist at first, and many other exciting characters that became involved in the process, more and more clues came into focus, while one by one, chests with the victim's bones were discovered in different French cities!

Soon, a macabre treasure hunt started!

If this original and unique plot didn't hook you into reading the book, a brief scan of the first few chapters and Enzo's brilliance would immediately get you addicted and eager to breathe this novel cover-to-cover in a matter of mere hours!

While the anxiety for the outcome of the hunt didn't hit me right from the beginning, it kept on being built stone to stone, at least the events reached a climax I would have never in my wildest dreams thought about!

I mean, of course, I had spent many hours thinking about who and what was behind everything, even suspecting a specific someone, but nothing had prepared me for the actual truth!

I also loved the fact that the police was always a step behind Enzo, and Enzo was always a step behind "someone" else!

Amazing, just amazing!

All in all, 10 stars, (5 just doesn't seem nearly enough)
for a book that pleasantly surprised me and kept me on the edge of my seat
with its brilliance and unexpectedness throughout the whole read!

Detailed overview of all items included in my very first package from The Blind Date Book Company!

THE BLIND DATE BOOK COMPANY

"NEVER JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER"

A while back, I was very fortunate to receive my very first rep package from The Blind Date Book Company!

You can read my first impression of my Blind Date, by clicking on the photo!

The items that I received in my package were the following:

❥ The Love Letter, contained in this adorable little enveloped, sealed with a heart, only for me to open it!
❥ A Lyons No. 3 coffee bag, with detailed instructions on the exact way to brew my coffee, on its back.
❥ My wrapped Book! Which was so gorgeous that I almost *almost* didn't want to unwrap!
As you can see, I picked these four words:

COTTAGE
MYSTERY
FAMILY
SECRETS

Here is a photo of the items, with the book now being revealed:

The book was "The Hidden Legacy" by G.J. Minett.

I have to admit that, having already spotted the word mystery in the 4 words, I was very excitedly waiting for a book of the mystery genre!
And, I was very pleased with what I got!

Here, you can read the description in the back of the book (click on the photo to enlarge it):

The blurb in the Goodreads is:

"1966. A horrifying crime at a secondary school, with devastating consequences for all involved.
2008. A life-changing gift, if only the recipient can work out why . . .
Bearing the scars of a recent divorce - and the splatters of two young children - Ellen Sutherland is up to her elbows in professional and personal stress. When she's invited to travel all the way out to Cheltenham to hear the content of an old woman's will, she can barely be bothered to make the journey.
But when she arrives, the news is astounding. Eudora Nash has left Ellen a beautiful cottage, worth an amount of money that could turn her life around. There's just one problem - Ellen has never even heard of Eudora Nash.
Her curiosity piqued, Ellen and her friend Kate travel to the West Country in search of answers. But they are not the only ones interested in the cottage, and Ellen little imagines how much she has to learn about her past . . .
Graham Minett's debut novel, The Hidden Legacy, is a powerful and suspenseful tale exploring a mysterious and sinister past."

Doesn't that sound totally mysterious, or what? 🙀😍💘

I also brewed the Lyons coffee bag I received with my package, and I had to stop myself from drinking the whole cup before taking enough photos!! I loved this brand of coffee!!

The amazing thing is that there was a thoroughly detailed description in the back of the Lyons wrapping bag, so I knew how much time I was to brew it to make it strong enough for my tastes!

All in all, I am totally in love with this package, and I absolutely recommend it to everyone!
