Book Review | The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
The Night Circus
by Erin Morgenstern

The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night.

But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway: a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will. Despite themselves, however, Celia and Marco tumble headfirst into love - a deep, magical love that makes the lights flicker and the room grow warm whenever they so much as brush hands.

True love or not, the game must play out, and the fates of everyone involved, from the cast of extraordinary circus performers to the patrons, hang in the balance, suspended as precariously as the daring acrobats overhead.

Written in rich, seductive prose, this spell-casting novel is a feast for the senses and the heart.

My Book Review

The Circus arrives without warning...

This was my 700th read and what a magical, precious story it turned out to be.
Not to mention, the perfect Hallowe'en read.

The Night Circus narrated the story of The Night Circus, a magical circus where an even more magical competition was hosted, unbeknown to its members. That wasn't a simple contest, however, but a fight to death between Celia and Marco. At least, that was until the two youths fell madly in love.

There were so many things I deeply loved in this book.
For one, the writing style, so lyrical and easily flowing, that one could describe it even magical! Each chapter was small and quick making you part of the action and unable to put it down.

The characters were even more precious than the book, and I loved them all, getting attached even to the ones who were troublesome. We start the book by getting to know Celia and Marco as they grow up, across the years, and soon we get acquainted to other significant characters for the storyline, even if we don't realize their importance right away.

The magic system of this story was extremely unique and unusual, as it featured magic that could be actually taught, which I found a fascinating aspect, and now I wish for someone to teach me, too!

If there was one thing that mildly threw me off were the lengthy descriptions, which were quite often but not present in every chapter. They made the book feel especially slow in the beginning, although, that, thankfully, changed the more we proceeded into the story and its protagonists.

To sum up, The Night Circus blew me away and surpassed my expectations, just like the Circus brought everyone together and made so many members of the public fiercely love it.

The last 3 pages even gave me goosebumps...

Goodreads Blurb:

Dear Logan,
Someday I'm going to write a book: How Not to Die in Alaska - A Girl's Guide to Fashionable Survival.
I bet you don't know that a hair pin can make an excellent fishing hook. You may think you can use just any kind of mud for mud masks, but trust me, you CAN'T! In a pinch, nothing starts a fire like nail polish remover. Alaska is tough. You might know this, if you ever replied to my letters.
After Maddie's Secret Service dad takes a bullet for the president, he takes Maddie somewhere he thinks they'll be safe - far away from the White House and the president's son, Logan.
But when Logan comes to Alaska, so does the danger.
If there's one thing Alaska has taught Maddie, it's how to survive. And now her best friend's life depends on it ...

My review:

I would like to thank the publisher and NetGalley for providing a free copy for me to read in exchange for an honest review.

Ally Carter did it again...

This is how I sum up my experience with this book.

I have been an avid Ally Carter loyal follower and admirer ever since I read her Gallagher Girls series (which I still need to finish, but anyway), and never up 'till now has she ever failed to capture my attention and make me lover her books.

This is the case with this book, as well. I was quickly sucked into its uniqueness (because I have never before read such a capturing and adventurous novel, set in ALASKA nonetheless), and found myself enjoying every minute of it.

I loved so many things in this book. Maddie and Logan, and the weird and sudden turn of events that changed their lives forever all those years ago, the fact that this book was set in Alaska, the bad guys, the fact that our heroes were so clever and Maddie actually kicked some serious butt.
And, then I was so anxious over everything, and how they would survive and return home sound and safe, whether they would manage to salve their relationship.

So good, so good. Made me remember why I can't go without an Ally Carter novel for long. Like, seriously, it's become an addiction.

All in all, 4 stars for an amazing survival story that
kept me rooted to my spot throughout the whole adventure.

Oh, in Alaska, too!

Goodreads blurb: The only thing 17-year-old Jane Sinner hates more than failure is pity. After a personal crisis and her subsequent expulsion from high school, she’s going nowhere fast. Jane’s well-meaning parents push her to attend a high school completion program at the nearby Elbow River Community College, and she agrees, on one condition: she gets to move out.

Jane tackles her housing problem by signing up for House of Orange, a student-run reality show that is basically Big Brother, but for Elbow River Students. Living away from home, the chance to win a car (used, but whatever), and a campus full of people who don't know what she did in high school… what more could she want? Okay, maybe a family that understands why she’d rather turn to Freud than Jesus to make sense of her life, but she'll settle for fifteen minutes in the proverbial spotlight.

As House of Orange grows from a low-budget web series to a local TV show with fans and shoddy T-shirts, Jane finally has the chance to let her cynical, competitive nature thrive. She'll use her growing fan base, and whatever Intro to Psychology can teach her, to prove to the world—or at least viewers of substandard TV—that she has what it takes to win.

My review:

Jane Sinner. One name, so many levels.
And, we are lucky enough to be reading her thoughts firsthand.
Because this is her journal, where her deepest thoughts are being written under utter secrecy.

Jane's whole life has changed ever since the Event. And, the author delivers everything brilliantly.
Everything starts slowly and we only get glimpses here and there of her old life and what she used to be like.

In the beginning she seems like a tough to love girl, but she evolves as the plot thickens, and by the end of the story I couldn't help but have fallen in love with her.

The story starts speeding up after she starts participating in House of Orange, a big-brother-type reality show who starts as a YouTube sensation and ends up being so much more. And, just like its popularity in the book, I started to feel affectionate towards it and the people behind it gradually and steadily, too.

But, the audience's and my affection towards HOO are not the only things developing through this story. Jane is, too.

She has been diagnosed with a mental health issue and taking antidepressants.
And, of course, I couldn't help but be even more interested in her, due to that reason and my psychology degree.
Her mental health is even in danger right in front of the reader's eyes at some point, and all of my instincts yearn to help her, just like her environment tries to, although not always successfully.

And, not even get me started about the plot twists and turns, especially the biggest one around the middle of the book, which got me (and apparently every viewer of HOO) so deeply immersed into the plot and Jane's shenanigans.

Overall, the author promotes through her book an important mental health issue in such a... healthy way, and the very essential message that people do not need condolences and pity, but friendship and affection, especially after facing psychological problems.

All in all, 4 stars for a brilliantly written book featuring
an amazing and deep in so many levels character,
her refreshingly original and enlightening story
and a deeply important message.

My Review:

This crime book provided a quite interesting and a bit different read, than what I had expected.
I picked up this title, as a part of a Crime Marathon hosted by the publisher, in which we are supposed to read 6 books that take place in 6 different countries.
As you can tell, one of the countries I chose was USA!

I had never before heard of a department of the police that concentrates only in the well being of the celebrities and famous people of the city.
And, I'm not even sure that there is a whole department with an official name and all, exactly like described in this book.
But, I found the idea quite interesting, and quite a few of the characters also fit this job perfectly!

While translated in Greek, I could tell that the book was well written.
The plot was very interesting, and I really loved the fact that the story was also narrated from the criminal's point of view, too!

And what a criminal!

The main characters were also very interesting, and, while you can tell that the hero is torn and mostly inclined towards his new partner - and ex girlfriend, who is now married to another man -, there is another woman, between whom and him I believe to exist some important chemistry!

Well, I really want to keep reading the adventures of the Red department of the NYPD and also find out more about how the relationships of the heroes will proceed.

All in all, 4 stars for a really interesting read, that,
while not a typical crime novel who deals with serial killers and stuff,
it also has quite the dose of the type of intrigue I enjoy!

“Is this your first vacation since going home?”
She nodded. “It is. I still can’t believe that I won. I only signed up because my friend insisted and because the proceeds benefitted alcohol awareness. I saw so many patients come into the hospital who were suffering from alcohol abuse. Still, I never expected to win the contest.”
“So the possibility of a date with me had nothing to do with you entering?”
She sipped her champagne and gave him a shy look from the corner of her eye. “I will admit the fantasy of it all did have some appeal.”
He raised his brows and chuckled. “Some appeal. Wow.”
“Oh, come on. What do you want me to say?” she asked with a laugh. “That I stayed up every night praying that I’d be chosen?”
“Not quite that, but surely you were somewhat excited.”
“See, that’s the problem.” She pointed a finger at him, but her brown eyes flashed with humor. “You’re used to women throwing themselves at you. This weekend will be good for you.”
“How so?”
“You need a few days with a woman who isn’t trying to get something out of you. I’m more excited about seeing the city, going to a movie premiere and trying on clothes I wouldn’t be caught dead in back home than in seducing the movie star.”
He placed his arm on the back of her chair, making sure to let his hand brush across her shoulders, and moved closer to her. Her eyes widened and her full lips parted with a quick breath before she looked away and finished the rest of the champagne in her glass. She might talk a big game, but Faith was attracted to him as well.
“That’s the third time you’ve said that. Who are you trying to convince?”
“You. I know what you’re up to, sliding close to me and giving me the sexy voice and eyes routine.”
“You think my voice is sexy?” he asked, lowering his voice an octave.
She shook her head and laughed. “Don’t go all Barry White on me.”
“I’d like to go all Irvin Freeman on you,” he said in his regular voice. Though he tried to keep the tone light, some of his seriousness came through.
Her smile faltered, and he saw by the warming of her eyes and the catch of her breath that she heard it.
“Is that what you do with your leading ladies?”
Her soft, sweet drawl slid in beneath his skin and heated his insides. It had gotten thicker with her question. How thick would it get if he were deep inside her?
“What I do with my leading ladies is acting. I’m not acting right now. What I’m thinking and feeling is all real.”
She shifted in her seat. “I don’t believe you.”
“Then believe this.”
He lowered his head and pressed his lips against hers, with enough firmness to let her know he was serious, but lightly enough for her to pull away if she didn’t want the kiss. Her body shook, and her lips parted with a gasp. He wasn’t a man to pass up an opportunity, and he took the chance to deepen the kiss.
He’d never believed in electricity or sparks igniting when a man kissed a woman, but something he’d never felt before happened as he kissed her. His skin tingled, the blood rushed through his veins, his senses heightened to everything around them. The sweet scent of her perfume, the softness of her lips, the way she tasted of champagne, all seemed amplified. And like a man who’d gotten a taste of something he really liked, he dove in for more.

This book narrates the story we have all dreamed about at some point in our lives!
Actually, every person that has ever had a crush on a celebrity can completely relate to the heroine and absolutely love the book! I totally found myself on this position!

But, first things first...

The plot revolves around the competition in which Faith Logan entered after being nudged from her best friend and eventually entered. It entailed a makeover, a tour around New York and her attendance to a charity event, with the famous (and swoon-worthy) Irvin Freeman!

But Faith, given that she didn't even remember entering the contest, is not the typical fan-girl! She is not swooning over some time spent with a celebrity and she definitely doesn't feel like a makeover is necessary for her!

Eventually she agrees to accept the offer and soon realizes that Irvin is not a fame-crazed person. In fact, he is quite the opposite! But, when things start to get a little hotter between them, the paparazzis make their uncomfortable appearance, making Faith question their ability to evolve as a couple in something more meaningful! Will Irvin be able to finally convince her otherwise?

This was fantastic read, that made me constantly picturing myself in Faith's position and swoon all over again about the whole experience she went through.

Both Faith and Irvin were down-to-earth individuals, something I deeply loved them for.

Faith was not a woman who would succumb to Irvin's will just because he was famous and (oh, so handsome). She didn't even want to share the fake part of his life. She knew that even if everything seemed a little glamorous at first, this was not the kind of life she could picture herself enduring!

Irvin liked being famous alright. He also loved the money he earned, which gave him a sense of safety and security he had never felt during his tough childhood! But, the fact he had also lived like that for a part of his life, also made him conscious of the bad aspects of being a public person. Meeting Faith made him realize all that much more about what he had and what he wanted out of his life!

All in all, 5 stars for an amazing read,
that absolutely everyone who has ever had
a crush on a celebrity will deeply enjoy!

EXCERPT BOOK 1 – Sunset Rising:

(Sunny O’Donnell and Jack Kenner on starting a rebellion)
I went at him as fast as I could, and when I saw the nose of the gun come up, I pushed it down and used it to give me balance. I raised my leg and kicked him in his side. His grip on the gun loosened for a second, and I grabbed it with both hands while swinging my leg in a backward arc that brought me behind him. I brought the gun up under his throat and held it there. I heard people clapping and looked up to see them staring at me.
“You do catch on quickly,” Jack said, smiling.
I loosened my grip on the rifle, and he lowered it. “Am I scaring you, Jack?”
Suddenly Jack’s hands were on me, and he threw me over his hip. I hit the floor with an ungraceful flop.
“A little bit.” He stepped away and left me to pick myself up. “It’s going to be lights out soon, so we should wrap it up,” he said to the room.
“Can we try again tomorrow?” Raine asked.
Jack looked around the room to see if anyone else was interested. Most people wanted to come back. Jack asked the guards, and they agreed as well.
“You were amazing tonight,” Jack said once we were alone. “You blew me away.”
“I guess it went well.”
“You were great, but we only had maybe fifty people in that room, not nearly enough to take on the few hundred guards that patrol down here. I told you before, power comes with numbers, and we don’t have numbers.”
“I don’t think we stand much of a chance anyway. I expect someone in that room will gladly turn us in for the four hundred credits Holt is offering.”
When we arrived at our apartment, I scanned my hand across the lock and went in.
“I know. I think that too.” Jack shut the door behind him. Then he picked up one of the chairs and put it under the doorknob. I gave him an inquisitive look. “At least it will give us a little notice if someone comes.”
“I’ve always known we’ll be caught eventually, but now that it might be real, I’m scared.”
I didn’t want to die now that I had found a reason to live. I wanted to see this rebellion through and free Summer from Holt; have the chance to find my father if he was still alive; help liberate the Pit from centuries of slavery. I wanted time to finish what we started.
“You’re scared?” he asked in surprise. “I can’t believe the girl who stood up on a chair and convinced an entire room to start a rebellion is scared.”
“And you’re not?”
“Terrified. Hey, what was wrong with Raine’s wife? She seemed a little out of it.”
“Women get that way after they’re sterilized.”
“After they’re what?”
“Sterilized.” He had an odd look on his face. “You must know about the Sterilization Program. Your government came up with it ten years ago. If a couple doesn’t qualify to have a child, the woman is sterilized, and whatever they inject her with makes her go… blank. The injection changes a woman. She’s not as full of life as she used to be.”
Jack was staring at me with a horrified look on his face when the lights went out, leaving us in darkness. Maybe he didn’t know about that program.
“We should get some sleep,” I said.
“I’ll take the chair.”
“No. We shared last night, we can do it again tonight.” Considering the way I responded to his kiss this morning, it probably wasn’t a good idea. But we both needed a decent sleep. Jack was exhausted from sleeping in the chair, and I couldn’t afford to be tired and sloppy with Madi as my supervisor.
“Are you sure?”
“Yeah. Just stay on your on side of the bed.” But I didn’t really mean it. I walked toward the bedroom.
“That bed isn’t big enough to have sides.” He stumbled after me, knocking a chair over.
“You really can’t see, can you?”
“And you’re surprised? It’s pitch black in here.”
I took him by the hand and guided him toward the bedroom. He took off his t-shirt and flopped down on the bed. Since he was blind in the dark, I stripped off my vest and put my t-shirt back on before I climbed in.
“It’s not pitch black in here. The guards use nightlights, and it leaks into the apartment.”
He opened his eyes as wide as he could and looked around the room. “I guess you have to born in the Pit to find light where there isn’t any.”
I rolled that thought over in my mind and realized just how true it was.

Book Blurb

No Going Back:
Kellen Brand's inheritance turns out to be a whopper -- one dilapidated farm in West Virginia and one guardian angel! Since Kellen is convinced no sane woman would choose to live in Riverside, she vows to sell her farm and quick.

Her handsome and reclusive neighbor Luke Kenyon must block the farm sale or risk exposure of his family's secrets. While Kellen has located one potential buyer, she faces a town full of objectors. Someone is trying to frighten her off, and Luke is forced to step in and rescue her more than once.

Unfortunately, Kellen can't seem to stay out of trouble. She stumbles onto a clandestine hazardous-waste-dumping operation next to her farm, and she prays Luke has one more rescue up his sleeve. It's her only hope of staying alive.

Unless her mother really did leave her a guardian angel… ____________________________________________________________

Angel to the Rescue:
Child psychologist Rachel Kelly isn't quite sure how to handle the situation with her newest client -- a six-year-old boy who says he can talk to angels and one is coming to help Rachel. She already has her hands full of trouble this Christmas season, and things quickly take a turn for the worse when a stalker crashes Rachel's Christmas party and takes her young clients hostage.

Police negotiator, Lt. Jake Dillon, walked away from his fiancée Rachel when she suddenly balked at having kids. His kids. Yet when the hostage crisis erupts, Rachel calls Jake first. Now he has a choice to make -- stand back and wait for the cavalry to save Rachel or step in and try to save her himself. Time is running out, and Jake may be their only chance for rescue.

Unless Rachel's little angel-spying client is telling the truth…

excerpt

No Going Back (Kellen falls in the River):
The frigid water closed in over Kellen, and she lashed out with both arms to force her head above the surface for a desperate breath. Her hiking boots would sign her death warrant; they already felt like concrete blocks. She had only minutes, maybe seconds, to keep herself afloat. She thrashed again, and this time her face barely cleared the water's surface. She was ready and screamed with all her might.

The icy water filled her eyes, but she couldn't devote the split second needed to wipe them, so intent was she on keeping her mouth above the water long enough for a precious lungful of air. She scissored her legs to help her dwindling buoyancy, but the physical act was so difficult with the boots on, her muscles screamed with the effort.

How many more times can I get a breath? Two maybe three?

All her muscles strained in revolt as she scissored her legs again. She plummeted after each thrust, and her best effort barely pushed her mouth and nose above the surface. She didn't scream again; there was no one around to hear, and she couldn't spare the strength. Less than a minute had passed since she'd hit the water.

Down she pushed her arms, but the heavy flannel shirt fought back. She opened her eyes and could see the surface, yet at the peak of her thrust, her lips were still in the water. She tried to scissor her legs, but she had nothing left. She feared she would sink and flailed both arms upward.

Death hovered at her shoulder, near as the blackest of shadows beneath the dock, tangible enough that she could reach out and touch it. She pulled her head back and saw a blurred shadow moving overhead. Hope buoyed her escape from the frigid arms of the river pulling her down, and she forced her way to the surface.

A huge hand plunged into the icy water and grabbed her right arm, and she felt her body pulled toward the surface. The second her mouth was exposed to the air, she gasped for a breath. A cough wracked her frame and threatened the tenuous hold of the mighty hand on her arm. She sunk back down, her eyes filled with water, and her vision blurred. She felt as though she weighed a ton, with the soaked clothing and boots, and grew terrified the hand couldn't hold on. Yet she was pulled higher until another hand grabbed the back of her shirt, and her body was yanked up and sideways onto the deck. The mighty hands released her, and she clutched at the wooden planks to be sure she was far enough from the precipice to the icy water. She heaved two successive gasps, and a hard sob wracked her frame.

Two strong arms tugged her upright. She blinked rapidly to clear her blurred vision and saw Luke's face, his dark eyes wide. Nothing had ever looked so good to her in all her life. With another hard sob, she threw herself into his arms and broke into tears. The brush with death shattered all her resolve and kindled emotions buried in the deepest recesses of her heart.

He pulled her roughly to him and held her tight to his chest, mumbling soothing words into her ear. His warmth seeped into her, and she clung to him like her lifeline -- digging her fingers into his back, unwilling to let go, and unable to stop crying.

"I almost d-drowned," she stuttered, her face still buried against his chest.

"Good Lord, I know," he rumbled and squeezed her tight to him again.

"If you had been a minute later," she wheezed and tried to look up at him.

"Don't even think that!" he snapped.

She flinched and pulled back. His gaze looked hard and unyielding.

"Just be glad I got here in time," he whispered, and his eyes grew darker. He cupped her cheeks, lowered his mouth, and gently brushed his lips against hers.

The sizzle of heat shot straight to her heart and warmed her from the inside out. All she could manage was a nod. His kiss twisted all her wild emotions into a spinning vortex, allowing her only to react without thought, and she leaned in to kiss him again.

Angel To The Rescue [Rachel goes to Jake's apartment]

Rachel raised a finger to press the doorbell, and the front door jerked open. Startled, she jumped back.

"Are you gonna ring the damn bell or just stare at it all afternoon?" a grizzled-looking Jake asked.

His hair stuck out all over, and he had a two-day growth of beard that gave him a dangerous look -- that and the black tee-shirt and sweats he had on.

He bent down until they were almost nose to nose. "Well?"

"Oh… Um… Y-yes, I was going to press the bell, but now the door's open."

He straightened, his expression grim. "First Wally and now you."

"What?"

"Wally came by earlier to save me from my depressing thoughts." He stepped back and held the door wide. "I assume that's why you're here. You coming in?"

"Oh, yes." Her heart was beating so hard she feared he could see the pulse vibrate in her neck. He looked so sexy all rumpled up like that, and her fingertips started tingling again -- wanting to touch him anywhere to complete the connection.

She stepped past him and reminded herself she was only here today as a friend and a counselor.

As though he read her mind, Jake said, "You'd only come to my apartment if you thought I was sick or needed help, right?"

"Yes -- I mean, no." She turned to face him and saw the pain in his eyes. "I mean, I--"

Pain from the Buckhead crisis or pain from her?

"Which is it?" he asked flatly.

She should have known this wouldn't be easy.

"I went by the station first."

That apparently surprised him. He recovered quickly. "I'm still waiting for the why."

"You'd called in sick. I wanted to see if you needed--"

"Needed what, Rachel? You?" He closed the door, and the room suddenly seemed quite small. And quite dark -- all the blinds were pulled and the only light came from the nearby television.

"I thought maybe you'd need to talk about--"

She stopped. He had taken two steps closer, and she couldn't think. She took a deep and very audible breath.

"You've never been at a loss for words before, Rachel."

"We've never been broken up before," she blurted.

His eyes widened noticeably, then darkened. At least she thought they did -- tough to tell by TV light.

"You're right," he said hoarsely. "How do you like it?"

"I don't."

"Me neither," he growled.

Stay on track. Remember why you're here.

"Jake, I came by to see you because of the Buckhead crisis."

"I figured as much."

She could've sworn he looked disappointed for a fleeting moment. That gave her the courage to go on. "To offer my shoulder--"

"To cry on?" he sneered.

"No! To lean on. Please don't be ugly."

"I can't help it. You broke us up."

Incredulous, she gaped at him. "Me! Must I remind you? You left me."

He closed the distance between them -- so close she could feel his body heat.

"You let me leave," he said gruffly.

"I didn't--"

"You let me leave," he repeated his face only inches away.

His unique Jake scent wafted over her. She wanted to smother in it. She wanted...

"I didn't want you to go," she whispered.

She felt his arms slide around her at the moment his lips touched hers. No gentle kiss this. It spoke of need and desperation. His -- hers -- she didn't know for sure. She just wanted to cry from the relief of having his arms around her again.

She knuckled her fists into his warm tee shirt and tried to pull him closer, but the shirt was old and stretched unmercifully. She felt his lips smile against hers as he grabbed a breath and then kissed her again, his tongue sweeping in to stroke hers.

She could die from his wonderful familiar taste. She gave up on the shirt and wound her arms around his neck to pull him closer, to pull him into her if she could.

Suddenly, she felt his hands at her hips pressing her back, and she shamelessly hung on tighter. He reached up and pulled her hands down and then kissed each one.

His eyes were almost black. No doubt a reflection of hers.

"Like coming home, isn't it?" he rasped, his voice so hoarse it came out as a whisper.

Unable to get words past the lump forming in her throat, she could only nod happily and rested her forehead against his chest.
