Time is a prison. She is the key. Packed with danger, temptation and desire - a perfect read for fans of The Red Queen.

In the land of Sempera, the rich control everything - even time. Ever since the age of alchemy and sorcery, hours, days and years have been extracted from blood and bound to iron coins. The rich live for centuries; the poor bleed themselves dry.
Jules and her father are behind on their rent and low on hours. To stop him from draining himself to clear their debts, Jules takes a job at Everless, the grand estate of the cruel Gerling family.
There, Jules encounters danger and temptation in the guise of the Gerling heir, Roan, who is soon to be married. But the web of secrets at Everless stretches beyond her desire, and the truths Jules must uncover will change her life for ever ... and possibly the future of time itself.
'Sara Holland is a fierce storyteller. An intoxicating blend of blood, secrets, and haunting mythology, Everless gives new and terrifying meaning to the phrase running out of time.' Stephanie Garber, New York Times and Sunday Times bestselling author of Caraval

My Review:

What an amazing, captivating and completely breathtaking ride this story was!

This book became straightaway my new favorite novel, and for so many good reasons.

✰ The back story and universe? Clever, original, so so close to the truth, with the few powerful abusing that power in the expense of the more, but with a vital twist. They are not just taking their money. They actually steal their years of life through their blood. This is literally the currency of this world, and despite how frightening it sounds to live in such a world, I loved every bit of it!

✰ The heroine? Brave, intelligent, ready to sacrifice herself for her loved ones, even if that means she will get in trouble. Or, worse... One of my favorite protagonists of all time, hands down.

✰ The characters revolving around her? Her father paying the rent (which translates to "giving his blood and his remaining life") behind Jules's back to protect her and not let her give away her years.
Her strong friend, who I suspect has a lot more to give to the story, and I really missed not seeing her for the better part of the book.
Her childhood friends, who inspired strong feelings in me, because I knew something was not right immediately. But, I was very, very, very surprised when I actually found out what was wrong, and I have to admit, I wasn't completely right...

✰ The writing style? Fantastic, smooth and really making me wonder how this could be the author's first novel? We really need more books by you, Ms Holland.

✰ And, my fifth star goes towards all the things I really want to talk about in this book, but I can't, as they will be extreme spoilers. Such as the incredible revelations you would never imagine, the exceptional villain, and all the amazing twists and turns of the story.

All in all, five stars to a book I will definitely read again
(how could I not go back and re-interpret all the shady people's behaviours?),
the amazing start to an extremely promising and captivating new series.

And, - I really can't contain myself, so - five stars to Jules.

REVIEW | Extraordinary People by Peter May

" What has happened to Jacques Gaillard? The brilliant teacher who trained some of Frances best and brightest at the cole Nationale dAdministration vanished ten years ago. The mystery inspires a bet, one that Scottish biologist Enzo Macleod can ill afford to lose. The wager is that Enzo can find out what happened to Jacques Gaillard by applying new science to an old case. "

My Rating: ✿✿✿

My Review:

Most definitely one of the best books I read this year!!!

Extraordinary People was a book that I picked up because of the Crime Marathon and didn't really think that I would completely and totally fall for!

It was incredibly well-written and genius!

The story revolved around our main character's, Enzo's, ambition to find out if one of the most famous disappearances in Paris' history was a murder. With the help of a journalist at first, and many other exciting characters that became involved in the process, more and more clues came into focus, while one by one, chests with the victim's bones were discovered in different French cities!

Soon, a macabre treasure hunt started!

If this original and unique plot didn't hook you into reading the book, a brief scan of the first few chapters and Enzo's brilliance would immediately get you addicted and eager to breathe this novel cover-to-cover in a matter of mere hours!

While the anxiety for the outcome of the hunt didn't hit me right from the beginning, it kept on being built stone to stone, at least the events reached a climax I would have never in my wildest dreams thought about!

I mean, of course, I had spent many hours thinking about who and what was behind everything, even suspecting a specific someone, but nothing had prepared me for the actual truth!

I also loved the fact that the police was always a step behind Enzo, and Enzo was always a step behind "someone" else!

Amazing, just amazing!

All in all, 10 stars, (5 just doesn't seem nearly enough)
for a book that pleasantly surprised me and kept me on the edge of my seat
with its brilliance and unexpectedness throughout the whole read!

My Review:

❗ This is the second book in the series, you can read my review of the first book HERE ❗

The first book in The Elementals series, Army Of Fire (let's call it AOF! I love giving nicknames to things I love) was something else! It contained action, so much plot and so much imagination that became one of my favorite reads of 2016.

But THIS book, The Earth Key (how about TEK)? It even surpassed that point!
It was so PACKED with action and new information kept coming for Ka, her background, her mother and her involvement in all of this, the dark enemies Kata is called to fight...

Wow! Just, wow!
And, this is even a synopsis of everything going on.
But, let's take it one at a time!

Kata! In the first book I liked the character she started showing, but in the second book, she seems to have grown all that much more!
And, it is so logical with each part of her personality being given back to her. And, the fact that she is no longer kept in the dark!

I loved all the heroes and her friends, and people that support her, and her protector (OF COURSE), and at the same time I hated so fiercely her enemies!
Which felt so good and so exhilarating!

And, let me take a moment to admire Jennifer L. Kelly's vast imagination!
In AOF, Ka visited the Fire dimension, where the Fire stone was hidden!
In TEK, she visited the Earth planet, to retrieve the corresponding stone!

You would never believe how detailed are all the descriptions for each planet, how well-thought everything is, if you don't read the books yourself.
It really made me feel like the author had witnessed it all herself!

An amazing talent! The same goes for her writing, too.

AOF was released in October 25th, and EAK on December 6th! The rest of the books in The Elementals series will be available withing one year!!! How awesome is that?
I'm already on board for a fantastic year full of exciting new releases by Jennifer!

All in all, can I give more than 5 stars to this
incredibly well-thought and planned book??
5 doesn't seem near enough!

Exclusive Excerpt: Josh shakes his head, admonishing me. “Help your bro out and tie his tie.” Lifting his chin upward to signal my help, I giggle. “You wear a tie nearly every day. Why the help all of a sudden?” Blake’s ego make’s a surprise appearance from behind me as he quips, “It’s got to be because of his girl. What is it this week, Josh?” Josh’s stare frosts over, but if anything, among his anger I sense a bit of fear as he grunts, “Shut up, Blake.” Blake sticks his hands in his pockets, and struts around us, nose in the air. “C’mon, man. Don’t act like I don’t know you. There are only two things that make you nervous as hell. One, is spiders, you pussy. The second, well, that’s easy —commitment.” My throat goes dry as I loop my brother’s tie into a Windsor knot. I mean, this conversation is perfectly normal, but let’s not forget Josh is my brother, and his girlfriend, Vanessa, is one of my best friends. The idea of throwing commitment into the already awkward equation throws me. I peer up from my tying to see Josh already staring at me apprehensively. He chews the inside of his cheek, and releases a huff. “I’m not a commitment-phobe.” Why is it I feel like I’m intruding on their conversation as I make my final adjustment to my brother’s tie? Blake swivels around, smug and smiling, as if proud to admit whatever he’s about to say. “Bullshit. You and I both know we avoid commitment. It’s practically why we became friends. We understand each other. We avoid commitment by nature, but hey, that was until we met girls that handed our hearts to us on a silver platter, right?” Josh cannot fight his agreeing chuckle, but tries to cover it up as he shoots me an apologetic smirk. “I guess I can’t argue with that. Vanessa’s worth it though. And don’t forget, you break my sisters heart, I ruin you.” “Oh, ruin me? No death threats this time?” Blake goads with more attitude than I think he intends. Josh turns around to face him, and it almost seems playful. I’m hopeful for an element of normality between them. “I think it’s fair to assume both.” Blake clicks his tongue, and I hate that I think Blake looks hot when he goes into alpha-asshole mode when I know I should be scolding him, but then again, sometimes it’s good to stand up to Josh. “What makes you think she won’t break my heart?” Blake brazenly retorts. There’s a pause in the room, and both men swing their stare to me. Do I look like a deer in the headlights? Because I feel like one. The thought never crossed my mind that I would ever break anyone’s heart, let alone Blake’s. I consider my college friend and tutor, Richard Bennett, as a possible broken heart when I denied his advances, but he ran back into the arms of his ex, Heather, so it seems far from fair for it to qualify. Josh smiles warmly at me before turning back to Blake. “Skye? She can barely kill ants. What makes you think she would do the heart breaking when you’re far more experienced in that department?” Blake’s angular face blushes an adorable pink that’s so unlike him as he bashfully turns away, avoiding Josh’s glare. “Because I love her, man. Duh. She holds all the cards. When have you ever heard me say that?” Josh swallows down the idea before huffing, “I don’t know how I expect to get used to hearing that.” With Josh’s back to me I release my full ear-to-ear grin at hearing Blake. He peers over Josh’s shoulder to purposefully lock his stare with mine. The delicate, and charming wrinkling around his eyes confirms everything, and more. I’m caught in his spell as I pull in a deep inhale, eager to breathe him in, touch him, feel him —to just be near him. He knows it too as the corner of his mouth arches upward, and it’s as if he’s beckoning me. Josh, sensing the forming tractor beam going right past his face turns his body, which only gives me the opening I need to begin my sprint into Blake’s arms. Blake pulls his hands out of his pockets just in time to catch me. I look up into my favorite emerald eyes, trying to speak in a whisper, “You don’t have to say things like that, you know?” thinking that maybe he says them to prove something, whether it’s to me or Josh. He runs the tip of his nose down the bridge of mine, and that perfect bubble forms around us, and I haven’t got a care in the world. “I know I don’t have to, but I want to. It’s the truth, isn’t it?” Josh adjusts his throat loudly, rolling his eyes as he does it. Blake and I turn our attention to him. “Spare me the PDA until I get used it, will you?” Josh snaps. Blake defiantly drags his hands down my back, getting dangerously close to my ass. This time I’m the one who wants to roll my eyes, but it’s hard to ignore my body buzzing with anticipation at the movement. Could we NOT do this front of my brother, please?

- EXCERPT from MANGLED HEARTS -
At sixteen years old, I was insecure and quiet. I didn’t make friends very well. Girls were mean to me, though at the time I didn’t know why. Every day at school I read between classes, at lunch, and after while I waited for my second bus. The school bus dropped me off at the bus stop. Pathetic, huh?

It was a hot September day that changed my life forever. Nothing about me would be the same. Ever. I walked to the bench, oblivious to my surroundings. My nose was stuck in my current romance novel. I followed along as the girl fell in love with her best friend (the bad boy), wishing life was really that way. I didn’t even notice when he walked by me.

Or when he stopped a few yards from me, and came back in my direction to take a seat beside me.

“Hey. Do you want a cracker?” he velvet voice asked me.

I didn’t look up, I wasn’t sure if he was even talking to me. Why would an attractive senior be talking to me?

“Hey, I’m talking to you,” he said, a chuckle in his voice.

I slowly lifted my head, peering at him from under my long lashes. His dark brown hair swept across his forehead and his deep blue eyes made me gasp. He wore the ultimate laid back style, a white t-shirt and jeans. All he needed was a black leather jacket and he would be the bad boy from my book. The smile on his face was breathtaking, and I found myself unable to speak.

“Hi, I’m Cade,” he said, a huge grin on his handsome face.

“Hi, I’m Francesca.”

A princess, a pea, and a tower of mattresses. This is the sliver that survives of a story more nightmare than fairytale...

Excerpt:
A part of me died long ago.
It was the part of me that feels, and it was Calista’s fault.
What happened tonight was nothing new—innocent victims welcomed into our home, not knowing they would never leave. I learned long ago I could not help them, so I stopped trying.
But this time something was different. This time I was awake, burning with a gut-wrenching guilt, as the next victims slept downstairs. This time I knew the victims. And they didn’t deserve what was coming.
It had always been hard for me to make friends. I’d been called loner, loser, outcast, and freak. Even still, I remembered Maggie offering to show me around when I first transferred to their school. Through her, I met Kate and Piper. The three of them were always nice to me, while other kids kept their distance and spread rumors behind my back. I told myself I didn’t care—I wasn’t like them.
But being a loner was lonely.
So tonight when I saw Maggie and her friends here, something inside me snapped. Or, perhaps it was the dead piece of me coming back to life. Now I cared desperately about what was happening in the room below mine.
But there was still nothing I could do.
Calista usually lured in victims from out of town to avoid arousing suspicion. Pregnant ones were a particular favorite—easy prey, she called them. But Maggie and her friends came here all on their own. The opportunity was too good for Calista to pass up.
Everyone thought Calista was my mother, but she wasn’t.
Back in my day, almost four centuries ago, Calista had an alternate method of luring in victims. She and her husband, Theodore, advertised for hired help with their inn. The number of parents willing to sell their daughters into a life of servitude in exchange for a forgiven debt or a clean slate was staggering.
My father was one of them.
By the time my mother found out what he’d done, it was too late. There was no escape. I was bound.
My story was well known in this land, whispered as a bedtime tale to ease children into sleep. But, just like any other story passed down through time by rumors and idle gossip, the fragment that survived was woefully incomplete. It began something like this:
There is rumored to have been (once upon a time, of course) a princess, a pea, and a tower of mattresses.
That much was true, though in actuality it was only one mattress, not twenty. The pea was also real, though most would call it a precious stone—an emerald, to be precise.
The gem that sealed my fate was now in the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C. Calista was furious when she found it missing. She thought I’d stolen it until she remembered my limits. The identity of the true thief remains unknown.
Even though the emerald is no longer in our possession, we are still bound to it, as it is bound to us. Admirers of the opulent necklace where it rests don’t understand it. Like me, the gem is a prisoner, struggling against its fate.
Even now, centuries later, I don’t understand all the details of what happened to me that night. But it began with a troubled slumber on a bed of enchanted emeralds.
