Book Tour {Review, Excerpt & Teaser} -- Getting Lucky (Jail Bait #4) by Mia Storm

SYNOPSIS:

“Getting Lucky”
a song by Tro Gunnison

Wouldn’t care if I could. I’m up to no good.
Taking what I want instead of what I should.
 I’m made of pure greed. There’s shit that I need.
The mask is off and the demon’s freed.
 I’m gonna get drunk.
I’m gonna get played.
I’m gonna get rich.
I’m gonna get laid.
 And I’m gonna get Lucky.

Raised in the system, Shiloh Luck’s first sixteen years have been anything but lucky. After winning The Voice, she’s finally living the dream—a record contract, talk shows, a North American tour opening for the hottest band out there. Everything is going according to plan...until their frontman, Tro Gunnison, explodes her life into chaos. He’s shallow, self-centered, and completely infuriating, and he’ll do anything for notoriety. Including her. Like it or not, she’s stuck with him for three months on the road, but the longer they spend together, the more she begins to realize there’s more to Tro than anyone has ever dug deep enough to find. If his attention is anything other than just another publicity gimmick, she might let herself see where it leads. But before she can risk everything, she has to be sure.

If there’s one thing that Tro Gunnison has learned in the six years since he left his past in the dust, it’s that living life big, bold, and totally outrageous keeps people from seeing past the glare. He’s buried his demons beneath six feet of sex, drugs, and rock and roll, and he’s convinced no one will ever dig them up…until Lucky. She’s young, but not naive, and without even trying, she sees past the facade to the man underneath…which scares the hell out of him. Because what started out as smoke and mirrors has somehow turned real, and for the first time in his life, there’s someone he cares about more than himself. But it turns out getting Lucky could be a double-edged sword.

He’s always been sure it would be his past that would bring him down, but it might turn out to be Jail Bait instead.

MY REVIEW

What I particularly loved about this book was the fact that the author made sure we would get a clear image of the main characters' personalities!

When the self-centered and notorious Tro meets Lo on the backstage of a show, sparks are sure to fly between them! And, not just romantic ones! The two make a rather intense start, with a touch of unpleasantness!

With Lo surprised that her career has taken a lift and not a downfall after her winning of the music contest The Voice, a tour starts, requiring her spending more time with Tro!

The intensity between them soon starts to grow. With them getting closer and closer to each other, will Tro prove to be something more than a swallow man, thirsty for fame and, mostly, notoriety?

An exciting story, with two interesting and quite complex characters!

I instantly liked Lo, a little more down to earth and conscious about the life choices she has made, even if a little regretful about the fact she has to always be careful about her actions, as a public person.

I also loved the chemistry between her and Tro, two seemingly different personalities, who often conflicted with each other. I enjoyed so much reading about their slow and gradual bonding!

All in all, 4,5 stars for a deeply exciting and interesting novel
 with well-built and complex characters!

EXCEPRT

Chapter 1

Tro
I squint against the reflection of the megawatt stage lights off the shiny cover of the Rolling Stone issue Jimmy Fallon is holding up for the The Tonight Show cameras. There’s a ripple of excited chatter from the live audience, then a girl near the back shouts, “Marry me, Tro!”
On the screen at stage right, I watch as the TV monitor pans in on the cover, a full frontal of me totally nude except for the black and red Schector C-1 Hellraiser hanging from the strap around my neck and covering the part of me that would have made the cover X-rated otherwise. She’s my baby—my first electric guitar and the only thing I own that I truly give a shit about.
Jimmy flips his hand at the image. “It’s pretty safe to say you’re comfortable in the limelight, but some people say you’re over the top.”
I almost never agree to interviews. First, you sort of have to be sober for them, and second, they’re bullshit. But Jimmy’s pretty cool, and my manager was pissed that I’d turned down every other promotional opportunity leading up to this tour, so here I am.
I loop my arm over the back of the chair next to his desk and slouch into it, crossing one black-booted ankle over the other knee. “Balls out, man. That’s how I live my life. I know some people find that offensive, but…” I give the audience my best I-don’t-give-a-shit smirk. “Who the fuck cares?”
There’s a mix of chuckles and gasps from the studio audience, and the girl in the back yells out, “I love you!”
Jimmy cringes. “And…that’s why we do these segments on tape,” he says, scratching the top of his head. He leans on his elbows toward me. “So balls out.”
I nod. “I live life on my own terms. Otherwise, what’s the point. I march to someone else’s orders, then I’m living someone else’s life. I’m not gonna waste my time worrying about what other people think. I do my thing, they do theirs, and everyone’s happy. That’s all it’s gotta be.”
A wry smile curves Jimmy’s mouth as his fingers drum the desk. “That’s pretty philosophical for a guy who’s first big hit was about getting lucky in the middle of a barroom brawl.”
I pull myself up straighter. “Let it be, let it be, let it be, oh let it be,” I sing, doing my best John Lennon. Girls in the audience scream. “That was a from guy who’s first hit was all about begging some chick to love him.” I plant my elbow into the arm of the chair and lean toward Jimmy. “And as for nailing someone in the middle of a brawl, the deeper symbolism there is that life is all about finding the positive in adverse situations—looking for the silver lining, and all that shit. So that song might have been a little more philosophical than you’re giving it credit for.”
He cuts an amused glance backstage. “Got your finger ready on that bleeper, Pete?”
I’d apologize, but I don’t. Ever. That’s part of living balls out. I live in the moment and never apologize for any of it.
Or regret it.
 I spent way too much time doing that before I learned that the only thing that really matters is right now. My real life started six years ago, when I walked away from what I thought was life. I never look back at all the shit that came before. None of it matters.
 “So, I’ve got to ask,” Jimmy says, setting the Rolling Stone issue face down on his desk. “How sick do you get of the paparazzi and the tabloids? You must feel like you’re living in a fishbowl most of the time.”
He’s right but, “I don’t really give a shit.”
My manager, Ray, called me last night while I was kicking back at the hotel with the guys to ask me what the fuck I was thinking. Apparently, last night’s episode of Access Hollywood had someone’s iPhone footage of me banging some actress I don’t even remember meeting on a table at the Sunset Lounge. I was pretty fucked up at that after-party, but just because I don’t remember it doesn’t mean I doubt it happened.
“The way I see it, they’re just doing their job, trying to make a buck. Why anyone would want to read or watch that shit is beyond me, but as long as there’s a market, I can’t really get too pissed about it.”
“You don’t feel like you’re entitled to a private life?” he asks.
I give him half a shrug. “Nothing they do is going to change anything I do. I’m just living my life. If they feel compelled to capture that on film, so be it.”
“That attitude will probably save your sanity.” He scoops a copy of Roadkill’s latest studio CD off his desk and holds it up for the camera. On the over, I’ve got this sort of deranged psycho-killer look in my eye and the guys are in the shadows behind me. Totally fucking sinister.
“Speaking of which, the lead single off your new CD, ‘Insane,’ debuted at number one on the rock charts last month.”
“Yeah.” I send an appreciative wave toward the audience. “Thanks, guys.”
A handful of girls scream my name and the rest of the audience applauds.
“Fuck me, Tro!” the girl in the back shouts.

I shield my eyes with my forearm and squint through the lights to a seat near the back, where two security guards are converging. “Be right there, doll.” I flick a hand at Jimmy. “Just give me a sec to finish up what I’m doing here.”

Standalone Novella

~~~ MY REVIEW ~~~
This is not the first story written by Samantha Fontien that I read. All the previous ones were short stories, though, and spin-offs of the same series, while this was a full stand-alone novel. But, I was not at all surprised by the fact that I loved it just as much!! The "Hardman" himself is the one who really rules London, and the whole UK. An owner of an elite club, and the most feared member of society, widely recognizable, everyone avoids causing him trouble. He has built his empire doing things he knows he should eventually pay for, sleeping with a different woman, about every two hours, and dealing with people who oppose his authority once and for all. Yet, there is a woman that is his undoing. "She" as he likes to call her, is the one woman who can make him lose control in one time. "She" is the one who could rule this world with him and give him a total completion. But, he's not ready for that type of commitment just yet. He is still building his empire and fortune... But, what will happen between them when "she" unexpectedly shows up to his club on a business? A passionate story that featured every aspect of the life of a man who works at night. Right from the beginning, I was totally aware of the intimidation everyone should feel around the "Harman". Everything about him, from the sexual scenes to the more violent ones, was raw and untamed. And, the way he described his history with "her", it was made fairly obvious why a man like him would feel so strongly about a woman like her. They were the perfect match, with all her sass and all his playfulness around her! I was rooting for this couple right from the beginning, and was so strongly disappointed with the "Hardman" every time he went off releasing his tension with other women! But, at the same time, all this banter, all this game, it helped so much in the building of the tension for us readers, too. I just love the way this particular author does that in her stories!
All in all, 5 stars for another amazing experience
brought to us fortunate readers by Samantha Fontien!
INTERVIEW WITH SAMANTHA FONTIEN
SAM INTERVIEW
What made you write Hardman?
~ It was the one/story with the loudest voice for me. I had started two others, but this just fell out and onto the page. It was easy to write, for me, it wrote itself.
It's a step out of your normal theme, have you enjoyed it and can we expect more books in this Genre?
~ Maybe, as I absolutely loved writing it, especially his voice/grammar, as he’s not a stickler for the language rules like Duncan was. Hahaha. I've never sworn so much on paper. Hahahaha. Over 300+ F bombs related words, never mind the 70 odd C word usage. I even surprised myself, but I had to stay true to his character.
Duncan and Co, was and always will be a huge part of me and I had to follow Duncan’s rules for so long, so, it was refreshing throwing caution into the wind, hahahaha.  Even my editor at the beginning of HARDMAN's speaking, was ALL over the grammar, until she soon realised, that it was how he spoke, taking into consideration his education and his environment. In fact, when she corrects you with a sentence like this;
To say I am irked!!!! - He is PISSED OFF not irked - more Downtown Abbey than Hardman!!
... Then you know you have to watch, what Hardman say’s and how he delivers it. So yes, it was lovely not to watch my P’s and Q’s with him and I loved writing a good few of the chapters, they came out easy, so it’s defiantly something I am pondering on for the future.
And, it was my 1st, first-party POV too, as I normally do 3rd party and multi POV, so, yes, it was great fun. I do love writing the gory or fight/action scenes, and I did guns and manly stuff and so on, with the Dragonflies Trilogy. But that’s only because I like action myself. I see it as years and years of conditioning from my dad watching Cowboys and Indians and War/Espionage type films and books, Hahaha... Now, I have a ‘man brain’; I’m not a normal pinkie girl, I don’t DO pink lol.
Is there a follow on to Hardman?
~ Nope... It’s a standalone I’m afraid and... Expect more standalones from me too.
The reason for this is; because all my previous eight books (HARDMAN is my ninth,) have all been connected or entwined in some way. It was great having new people to play or talk with, as so to speak hahahaha. I am actually working on another new standalone title/story (which will hopefully be out late February or early March?) and I’m loving the freedom of new characters, although I do love my Dragonflies men and always will.
Swoon Rubin Miller, still does it for me and I love writing him, I really do.
INTERVIEW WITH THE HARDMAN
HARDMAN INTERVIEW
Sir, thank you for agreeing to do this interview. I hope I’m not holding you up from any important work.
~ Nah, you’re alright... Always got time for a pretty girl... And what’s with the ‘Sir’?
(He laughs shaking his head at me)
I’m hardly a ‘Sir’ am I? I’m a Geezer or a Gov if you prefer.
(He laughs again)
What do you like to do for fun?
~ (He shrugs his shoulders)
Dunno... Any ideas?
(Now he's knowingly smiling at me, as he winks. This guy is an outrageous flirt.)
Why do you do the things you do?
~ Dunno what you mean?
(He laughs now at me, trying to look innocent).
You’re not wired are you?
(He laughs again)
Nah, only joking with ya... I suppose I’m what you’d call, one of them ‘natural born leader’s...
Decisions will always have to be made... Even those, you don’t want to do... Someone has to take control... I’m just ‘The Someone’, that’s all.
(He shrugs insolently, like I’ve asked him what time it is?)
Do you enjoy the power and notoriety of it?
~ Yeah, I suppose I do. It’s always about the power; and the notoriety... I suppose the two go hand in hand with one another. But I always wanted a name for myself, always knew I would be something.
Do you sleep well after your punishments?
~ Yeah... Why wouldn’t I?
(He looks totally blasé now. I will say, I was a little scared asking him this, I understand why he has the reputation he does, he is very cool, calm and collected.)
... As I said, decisions are made every day, with anything you do... It’s how you deal with it that really matters. Punishment is necessary; it’s how we learn after all.
Put it this way... Growing up at my house, you got either the belt or the back of someone’s hand, for bringing trouble to the door or giving cheek..
So you learned pretty quickly, not to get caught, or, to be a cheeky cunt...  Everything you do, has consequences... And anyone who lives the lives, and do, what do what WE do, knows this from the ‘get go’...
Well they should do, unless they're as dumb as fuck? And that’s a problem, cause there’s always some brain-dead fucker out there doing something they shouldn’t. That’s why there’s people like me... To keep them fuckers in check, manage them. I always say; ‘It is what it is’...
I mean, think about it.... If it looks like shit, smells like shit... It’s SHIT!! Plain and simple, you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know that... And it’s the same philosophy for ‘if you’re caught doing something you shouldn’t’... Be prepared for retribution.
(He shrugs very matter of factly, and I find myself hanging on every word. I watch enthralled as he shakes head woefully. He’s a good speaker and incredibly charming. Makes me glad he’s too dirty to be in politics, as he’s quite captivating.)
What is so special about ‘Her’ that makes you want to give it all up? Do you think you will ever stop?
~ Everything about ‘Her’ is special... ‘She’ is truly’ one of a kind’. ‘She’s’ a good person, always was. She’s my total opposite. And that’s why ‘we’ work.
I’m a lucky fucker, but I always was... Oh, and let’s not forget,  I love the way she calls me a cunt... I’m a sucker for it.
(He winks again knowingly at me, the guy really is incorrigible.)
And yes, I have ‘Stopped’ as you call it. If you’re talking about work that is?
(He laughs cheekily at me.)
In fairness, it was time to; the writing was on the wall.
(Now he looks seriously at me shaking his head.)
You can’t live my kinda life and expect to live forever...
There will ALWAYS be someone up your arse or trying to take a big chunk out of it. There will always be someone gunning for your spot as ‘Top Dog’ if you have it, and ‘they’ want it, bad.
You’d have to want it bad as well, I can tell ya, to wanna try and take it from me!!
It’s human nature, to want to better yourself... But it’s pure ‘primal’, to want the number one spot... Especially if you’re a natural born hunter like me?
 I still do have my fingers in a few pies, but they are kosher. So, no harm, no foul.
(He shrugs.)
My problem is, I need to keep myself busy. You see... I’ve been making my own money since I was a kid in some way or another, always an entrepreneur me...
(He winks cheekily at me)
If there is money to be made, I guarantee you; it will be ME making it. But I DO know... If it’s not kosher and I don’t keep my nose clean, I’ll lose ‘everything’...
This I know as she tells me it daily...
Nah only joking... She’ don’t ‘have’ to ‘tell me’... I KNOW, she won’t tolerate any of my shit...
... And being honest, I don’t feel like I need to now, or I’m compelled to do it, if you know what I mean, you know, cause its naughty an all... Which was often, the very reason for me to do it in the first place...?
(He laughs cheekily at me.)
What can I say? I’m a thrill seeker, innit.
But believe me; I will tell ya, ‘She’ keeps me more than busy... I don’t have the time for anything, or anyone else now.
(He laughs to himself)
Should have done it sooner...
(He shrugs again nonchalantly at me.)
Oh well, you live and learn... Don’t ya?
After the interview, I found myself flirting with him for a further ten minutes, until he informs me, that he has to go and pick up his son up from school. As he leans in to kiss me on the cheek, I’m ashamed to say I found myself wondering if he was going to kiss me on the lips; seeing as he had been flirting with me throughout the entire interview, but sadly, he didn’t.
On his way out, I see him drop a bundle of money onto the table, paying the bill for the lunch we’ve just had, even though it was for his interview.
He may be a very bad man, responsible for having a hand in some horrible things and he maybe a little rough around the edges, but in all fairness to him... I found him very charming and a perfect gentleman, bar the continuous flirting which I have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed.
I can understand the attraction with the gangster life, if they’re all like him. But I would have to be like ‘Her’, and the way she approaches it, as that kind of lifestyle, really wouldn’t appeal to me either.
